Abigail Standing by a Window with Hands on Her Heartby KalebRosendahl

1 Samuel 25:3

Now the name of the man was Nabal; and the name of his wife Abigail: and she was a woman of good understanding, and of a beautiful countenance: but the man was churlish and evil in his doings; and he was of the house of Caleb.

The verse sets two married lives side by side, describing Abigail as a woman of good understanding and beautiful appearance and Nabal as harsh in character and evil in his conduct. Her understanding was not mere intellect but discretion and godliness joined to prompt action to avert harm when Nabal's insolence toward David threatened his whole household. She went to meet David with respect, pleaded for her husband's life, and yet did not excuse his selfishness.

Nabal's course displayed the very folly implied by his name. In him is seen what a man becomes when he yields himself to Satan's control, while in Abigail is seen Christlike womanhood. Where a husband cherishes a Nabal-like spirit he becomes narrow, contemptible, and domineering, provoking his wife and children to anger and making home life unlike the example of Christ.
