Saul and David Talk After the Spear Is SparedBible World
26:221 Samuel 26:22
And David answered and said, Behold the king’s spear! and let one of the young men come over and fetch it.
The spear was handed back at a time when David was still hunted by Saul and could find no place of rest or security. This was after Abiathar son of Ahimelech escaped Saul's slaughter of the Lord's priests and fled to David for refuge. David acknowledged to Abiathar that he had occasioned the death of all the persons of his father's house. He told Abiathar to abide with him and fear not, for he who sought David's life sought Abiathar's life also, but with David he would be in safeguard.
In the encounter David gave back Saul's spear by calling for one of the young men to come over and fetch it rather than bringing it himself. Saul had promised not to harm David, yet David did not on that account place himself in Saul's power.
