1 Samuel 26:5
And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him. And David arose, and came to the place where Saul had pitched: and David beheld the place where Saul lay, and Abner the son of Ner, the captain of his host: and Saul lay in the trench, and the people pitched round about him.
The scene described took place after Saul had put the priests of the Lord to death. In that aftermath Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, escaped and fled to join David. David urged him to remain with him and to set aside fear. The reason given was that the same enemy who sought David's life was also seeking Abiathar's life. Remaining with David would place Abiathar under safeguard.
