David Takes Saul's Water Jug at Nightby emmanuel_higgins

1 Samuel 26:7

So David and Abishai came to the people by night: and, behold, Saul lay sleeping within the trench, and his spear stuck in the ground at his bolster: but Abner and the people lay round about him.

This night scene belongs to the time after Saul had slain the priests of the Lord, when Abiathar had escaped and fled to David, and David kept him in safeguard with himself while Saul sought both David's life and Abiathar's life. David learned through friendly spies that Saul was again pursuing him after receiving a report from the Ziphites. Before the night visit David asked who would go down with him to Saul to the camp, and Abishai answered that he would go. Hidden by the deep shadows of the hills, they went with a few men by night to learn the location and exact number of the enemy forces.

They entered the camp unobserved and found before them the tents of the king and his attendants quiet in slumber. Saul lay sleeping within the encampment with his spear stuck in the ground at his head and a cruse of water beside him, with Abner his chief commander beside him and soldiers lying round about him locked in slumber. Their unobserved entrance was possible and the whole camp was helpless because a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen upon them. This shows how easily the Lord can weaken the strongest, remove prudence from the wisest, and baffle the skill of the most watchful guards.
