David Takes Saul's Water Jug at Nightby emmanuel_higgins

1 Samuel 26:8

Then said Abishai to David, God hath delivered thine enemy into thine hand this day: now therefore let me smite him, I pray thee, with the spear even to the earth at once, and I will not smite him the second time.

This belonged to the time when David was a fugitive from Saul, after Abiathar son of Ahimelech escaped Saul's slaughter of the priests and fled to David, whom David kept with himself under promise of safeguard because Saul sought the life of them both. The words were spoken at night inside Saul's sleeping camp, after David and Abishai had entered unseen under cover of darkness. They found Saul asleep with his spear stuck in the ground at his head and his cruse of water beside him, while Abner and the soldiers slept around him.

Abishai read the moment as God delivering David's enemy into his hand that day. He lifted his spear to kill Saul and asked David's permission to smite him down to the earth with one thrust that would need no second blow. David refused to permit it and commanded him not to destroy the Lord's anointed. He left Saul's fate to the Lord, for the Lord to smite him or for him to die in time or in battle, and told Abishai instead to take the spear and the cruse of water and leave. They got away unseen and unheard because a deep sleep from the Lord had fallen on them all, showing how easily the Lord can weaken the strongest, remove prudence from the wisest, and baffle the skill of the most watchful.
