1 Samuel 28:25

And she brought it before Saul, and before his servants; and they did eat. Then they rose up, and went away that night.

The verse belongs to the time of Saul's fear and distress as the Philistine army gathered for the coming battle at Gilboa. He came to the woman at Endor after the Lord refused to answer him by dreams, by the Urim, or by prophets. The meal takes place after the fearful prediction given by the spirit that appeared as Samuel.

The woman serves food to Saul and his servants, they eat it, and then they rise and leave that night. Weakened by fasting and terror, Saul eats in the sorceress's cave in preparation for the battle in which he will die. The Samuel whom Saul seemed to see was not the prophet raised from the dead, but a counterfeit impersonation by Satan's angels, who could both assume the form of the dead and disclose Saul's fate. The message from the counterfeit drove Saul toward ruin rather than leading him to repentance. Consulting the familiar spirit was a transgression against the Lord for which Saul was rejected and left to destruction.
