1 Samuel 30:14

We made an invasion upon the south of the Cherethites, and upon the coast which belongeth to Judah, and upon the south of Caleb; and we burned Ziklag with fire.

The verse records the raiders' own report that they had made an invasion upon the southern districts and burned Ziklag with fire. It belongs to the account of David's battle with the Amalekites before he became king, and his victory over them came just before his accession to the kingship of Judah. Because of that burning, David and his men on returning found their families taken captive. After seeking the Lord's direction they pursued the raiders and recovered the captives and the spoil.
