1 Samuel 9:11
And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here? And as they went up the hill to the city, they found young maidens going out to draw water, and said unto them, Is the seer here?
The encounter takes place when Samuel is old and his sons do not walk in his ways but turn aside after gain, take bribes, and pervert judgment. In that condition all the elders of Israel gather together to Samuel at Ramah and ask for a king to judge them like all the nations. There is no complaint against Samuel's integrity and wisdom, but the demand springs from discontent and pride and deliberate purpose. When the elders press this demand, Samuel answers without reproach and carries the matter to the Lord in prayer to seek counsel alone.
As Saul and his servant go up the hill toward the city they meet young women going out to draw water. They ask these maidens whether the seer is there. That inquiry leads them to learn that a religious service is about to take place, involving sacrifice and a feast.
