1 Samuel 9:26
And they arose early: and it came to pass about the spring of the day, that Samuel called Saul to the top of the house, saying, Up, that I may send thee away. And Saul arose, and they went out both of them, he and Samuel, abroad. All the elders of Israel gathered to Samuel at Ramah to ask for a king to judge them like all the nations, saying he was old and his sons did not walk in his ways, because his sons turned aside after lucre, took bribes, and perverted judgment. The demand was really motivated by discontent and pride and a deliberate purpose to set Samuel aside, which Samuel carried to the Lord in prayer for counsel. The verse describes Samuel and Saul going out early in the morning after their conversation on the housetop the night before. The housetop provided quiet and seclusion where Samuel explained to Saul the principles on which the government of Israel had been established, to prepare him for his high position.
