1 Samuel 9:27
And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God. And as they were going down to the end of the city, Samuel said to Saul, Bid the servant pass on before us, (and he passed on,) but stand thou still a while, that I may shew thee the word of God.
As they were going down to the outskirts of the city, Samuel directed Saul to have his servant go on ahead so that Saul would remain alone with him for a time. The purpose of this privacy was that Samuel might show him the word of God and reveal God's purposes for him. This took place the next morning as they were leaving the city together.
In that private meeting Samuel prepared Saul for the high position he was to occupy and anointed him as captain over the Lord's inheritance. To strengthen Saul's faith, he told him beforehand what would happen on his homeward journey. He also assured him that God's Spirit would qualify him for the station he was called to fill.
