1 Samuel 9:7

Then said Saul to his servant, But, behold, if we go, what shall we bring the man? for the bread is spent in our vessels, and there is not a present to bring to the man of God: what have we?

Saul held back from going to the man of God because the bread in their vessels was spent and they had nothing to bring him as a present. His question was what they could offer, since they were left without provisions for such a gift. The concern over a present reflected the custom of bringing a small gift as a token of respect when approaching a person of higher rank or office.
