1 Thessalonians 1:8

For from you sounded out the word of the Lord not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place your faith to God- ward is spread abroad; so that we need not to speak any thing.

From the Thessalonian believers the word of the Lord sounded out not only in Macedonia and Achaia but in every place beyond, and their faith toward God was spread abroad so widely that their reputation had already carried the message and further speaking was unnecessary. Truly converted believers spread the word of the Lord in this way, so that news of their faith reached far beyond their own region and others already knew of it without need for repeated testimony. The gospel's influence thus sounded out from believers and became widely known, applied as the pattern where the word goes forth with such effect that others do not need to repeat it.

The verse belongs to Paul's thanksgiving for his converts, whose faith had become widely known and whose turning from idols to serve the living God was cause for gratitude. Their wide witness followed a real work of the gospel in them through the Holy Spirit, turning them from idols to serve the living God. That conversion included waiting for Jesus, raised from the dead and coming from heaven, and awaiting His return.

Truly converted believers spread the word through their witness and through changed, zealous lives as true missionaries. Their faith in God together with their spoken witness made the word known far beyond Macedonia and Achaia, and the message they shared carried power, won hearts, and brought others to faith. A church can bear this witness when its members have the Holy Spirit's power and characters shaped by thorough conversion, making the word known beyond its own community so evidently that further explanation is unnecessary. This witness is demonstrated by a life turned from idols to God, with character and conduct showing Christ shaping them. Retaining old habits and worldly aims contradicts the claim that the word has sounded out in this way, for retained worldly habits and a character not shaped by Christ make it untrue to say so.

Their example shows the broad witness that can accompany the message of Christ's coming, following earnest, Spirit-filled work that turns people from idols to serve the living God. The same earnest, Spirit-empowered witness is needed today in proclaiming the message of Christ's second coming and His return. The verse is a pattern for workers, that their service should carry the truth to others and show spiritual power rather than merely provide food or advance a business. It illustrates the need for the message to sound forth so that people in other places can hear the word of the Lord and the reasons for the faith.
