1 Thessalonians 4:9

But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another.

God Himself teaches believers to love one another, so the basic duty of brotherly love needs no written explanation. This deep, sincere love for fellow believers marks true conversion in those who accept Jesus as Redeemer. The Thessalonian believers already practiced this love toward fellow believers.

In their case that practiced love extended to fellow Christians throughout Macedonia. Even so, they were urged to increase and grow in this love more and more. This love belongs to a life of holiness, shown alongside quiet conduct, honest work, and good dealings with those outside the church. Those who obey these words bear fruit that shows they are working with Christ.
