1 Thessalonians 5:23
And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
Paul's prayer is that the very God of peace Himself make believers holy through and through and keep their whole spirit and soul and body faultless until the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Wholly means the entire person set apart to God, and this keeping is God's own faithful work for those He calls, to be claimed by living faith and prayer. Sanctification is God's will and a real, attainable standard, accomplished through Christ who redeemed the whole person and restores God's moral image, through the truth of God's Word by the Holy Spirit in faith working by love and obedience to His law, and it is progressive from conversion onward in daily growth and overcoming until Christ's image is perfected. It embraces body as well as soul and spirit, for the whole person belongs to God as His purchased possession, requiring a submitted will, sanctified mind and speech, temperance and self-control over appetite and passion, obedience to the laws of physical life, and purity within and without, and it does not mean holy flesh or a claim to be already beyond sin. This holiness must be gained in this life to be ready for immortality, by unreserved daily surrender of all powers, time, and means to God's service in meekness, love, and purity at home and in all mission work, watching and praying under God's protection until the end.
Prayer Wording and Setting
The verse is Paul's prayer that the very God of peace Himself sanctify believers wholly and preserve their whole spirit and soul and body blameless unto the coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. It asks God to set the person apart completely and to keep the entire being until Jesus returns, fitting a life of full surrender to God and a deepening experience of knowing Him. This complete sanctification is shown in a life marked by Christ's character and sanctified works.
Wholly means the entire being set apart to God, and spirit and soul and body mean that complete sanctification embraces the whole person. It is a life closely conformed to His will, shining as a light without seeking honor for self. It is the only hope of salvation for devoted Christians. Where appetite and passion control the person, the spirit and power of the truth cannot sanctify the heart, so control over these desires is necessary for obedience to Christ as a true servant.
The keeping is God's own work, and the faithful God who calls believers will do what He calls them to. This preservation is connected with abstaining from evil and rests on God's faithfulness to accomplish it. It is received by consecrating all of oneself to God and submitting to the Holy Spirit's control, so that God does what He has promised. It is claimed by lying low subdued and broken at the foot of the cross while taking hold of His strength, trusting the merits and righteousness of Christ as a loving and mighty Saviour who saves now, taking God at His word and believing He means just what He says. It comes through living, actual faith that fights the good fight of faith and breaks the force of Satan's suggestions, resting on God's pledged word that He will be a present help in every time of need, fastened to the Lord Jesus Christ by a living, active faith and taking hold of Christ and the Holy Spirit amid great deceptions from seducing spirits, false science that makes of no account God and Christ, exalts itself through men, seeks to make void God's law, and works great miracles in the sight of men.
The prayer belongs with not quenching the Spirit, respecting prophecies, and testing everything, as instructions for believers awaiting the day of the Lord. It is joined to living at peace through humility, leaving a brother's faults to God, and loving one another in unity. Living at peace with one another belongs to being made holy in every part by the God of peace, who keeps believers blameless until Jesus appears and His kingdom comes, so it is a prayer for the whole church in its public life together, calling members to peace and unity as the way to be preserved ready for Christ. Those so sanctified in body, soul, and spirit are united by the Spirit in peace, and their unity magnifies the truth, grounded and settled in the faith where faith working by love purifies the soul and keeps from moving away from the hope of the gospel through being purified and cleansed by the washing of the Word, with God's promises never failing those who constantly watch unto prayer.
God's Sanctifying Work
Complete sanctification is a true Bible doctrine and the will of God, a real and attainable standard He makes possible rather than an impossible aim or unavailable blessing. Those prepared to meet Christ in peace must have a pure and holy character, and God is able to sanctify wholly to prepare them for that meeting. This sanctification embraces the whole person and means consecrating body, soul, and spirit without reserve to Him who gave His life, giving God His own as freely and fully as He gave Himself, because every soul is bought with a price and no one is his own. It requires not serving self nor following natural will, desires, taste, imaginings, plans, or ways, but denying inclination, taking up the cross, resisting the devil, fleeing to Jesus, and seeking the Holy Spirit for grace to overcome. It is the work of God and not of man, done by the Holy Spirit working the human agent and not by mortals working the Spirit, and it means discipline at every step, leaving no uncertainty about the safe course for developing a true Christian character.
When the Word is cherished as an abiding principle in the heart and held fast under every circumstance, all entrusted capabilities and undivided powers, even thoughts, are brought into subjection and captivity to Christ. This is true sanctification, in which all parts of the experience blend in complete harmony so that nothing is lacking and nothing is kept back for self-pleasing, and as one bought with a price the person glorifies God in body and spirit which belong to Christ, perfecting Christian character during probationary time. The work of the Spirit does not unfit for the common duties of ordinary life, with no one religion for business and another for church. Sanctification affects bodily life as well as character, involving temperance and bringing the body under control, since body and spirit belong to God and are to glorify Him. Selfishness, gluttony, and persistent abuse of the body weaken physical, mental, and moral power and hinder sanctification, while temperance and control of appetite help preserve those powers.
Christ has redeemed spirit and soul and body so that the entire being might be sanctified and preserved blameless unto the coming of the Lord, and the human agent need no longer continue in the world's sinful course. Sanctification to God is to be sought for body, soul, and spirit together, meaning the restoring of the moral image of God in man lost by sin and the improving of physical, mental, and moral capabilities, with great changes possible in the physical system by obeying God's laws and putting nothing defiling into the body. The work is done as laborers together with God, depending not on what man can do but on what God can do for man through Christ, and when there is whole surrender to God with full belief, the blood of Christ cleanses from all sin. This cleansing is provided through Christ's death and suffering and His complete sacrifice, calling for giving oneself to God now, leaving sin at once, abstaining from all appearance of evil, and unreservedly surrendering body, soul, and spirit to God's will and way, for which Christ died to give a perfect conscience. Turning from Christ to conform to health- and life-destroying practices of the world to gain favor with worldlings loses the favor of God, cripples religious experience, and breaks this wholeness, while religious zeal that harms people violates their worth as those purchased by the Saviour's blood.
Restoration to His image includes overcoming unnatural appetites and sinful habits, so that continuing to give liquor to one struggling with it cannot restore God's moral image, and places of help and instruction should support overcoming tobacco use and tea and liquor drinking, discarding flesh meat, and teaching young men to develop perfect manhood so they can teach what is good. God renews and sanctifies those who surrender themselves to Him, fitting them for His heavenly court, and humility and recognition of need bring a person close to Christ, while self-righteousness and satisfaction with one's own goodness leave no room for Him. Sanctification is God's work in the believer by which He makes the person wholly holy and preserves the whole person blameless until Christ returns. It is accomplished through faith in Christ and the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit, who leads into truth and molds and guides willing people into truth under Christ as Leader, with the spirit of understanding enabling them to receive and discern the Holy Spirit as Counsellor.
The truth by which sanctification comes is God's Word, and God's law expresses that truth as truth itself, holy, just, and good. A holy and sanctified character is therefore formed by obedience to its principles and accords with them, following Christ's example of obedience to the Father, and it is conformity to God's will through obedience to His law by faith in Christ, not freedom from obligation to keep God's commandments. This work brings conformity to God in will, temper, and spirit, purifies from iniquity, and depends on faith, daily guidance by God's power, and the Spirit's control, so that when self is surrendered and faith works through love, God's work of perfection can continue in the believer whose sanctified life reflects heaven's atmosphere. Conversion begins the Christian life, and believers continue to grow toward Christ's character while resisting sin and relying on divine help.
Recovering from the Fall and regaining the divine image lost through Adam's sin and continued transgression is the work of a lifetime, whether life is long or short, beginning in conversion and continuing in daily growth, overcoming, beholding Christ, and being molded until Christ's image is perfected. It involves disciplining and training the thoughts, continually beholding the Pattern, and growing in grace and knowledge of the truth, with even small responsibilities and ordinary conversation belonging to this training. Being complete in Christ means looking to Him as the model, whose perfection included both outward conduct and inward grace expressed in meekness and gentleness, while His opposition to hypocrisy and sin was strong and searching. Christians are to grow toward perfection and become more like Christ by beholding Him, relying wholly on God with childlike trust, since God alone can give wisdom, help, bless, and preserve blameless until Christ appears. This sanctification is received by holding fast to Jesus in faith, not by looking to self to furnish worthiness and not by talking unbelief, weakness, doubt, and discouragement, but by pressing on toward a higher, nobler life with life hid with Christ in God, earnestly striving for goodness, love, mercy, forbearance, and kindness, confessing sin at the cross, and holding faith and the beginning of confidence firm unto the end so pardoned sin will not appear against the sinner.
The call to be wholly sanctified does not mean perfection of the flesh, holy flesh, or that the body becomes holy or perfect in this life; Christian perfection of the soul is possible through forgiveness and cleansing from sin in Christ. The body can be improved by obeying God's laws and avoiding what defiles, while sanctification means complete surrender to God and dependence on what God does through Christ, not a claim that one's actions are incapable of sin. Treating the verse as proof of perfection in the flesh misuses it and opens the way to fanaticism, delusion, and the false claim that its advocates cannot sin or are already perfected and ready for translation before His coming. True Christian growth does not lead people to claim sinlessness or their own righteousness; as they behold Christ's perfect character, they recognize their own defects more clearly, follow His example, and depend on His merits. Humility and recognition of need bring closeness to Christ, while self-righteousness and satisfaction with one's own goodness leave no room for Him.
Whole Being Sanctified
The verse teaches that the body must be sanctified as well as the soul, so that the body is kept holy and the spirit kept pure and the whole is preserved blameless and presented to God through Jesus. Bodily cleanliness belongs to this holiness, and diseased bodies and minds hinder the wholeness God purposes, for His aim is not physical health alone but perfection and holiness of spirit. This sanctifying and preserving must be done before immortality is received, with earnest purity in the corrupt conditions of the last days, so that His people remain unstained amid corruption. In that state the Spirit of God has full and perfect control, influencing every action.
The whole person — spirit and soul and body — belongs to God as His property and purchased possession, bought with Christ's blood and the life-blood of His Son, so no one is his own. The entire life is therefore to be consecrated to His service and placed under His discipline, direction, and the Spirit of truth, with every faculty used to glorify Him and every organ kept in health so that body and mind, sinew and muscle work harmoniously in the best and most precious service. Guarding that entrusted property faithfully means refusing any abuse of human powers, since abuse shortens the time a life can be used for God's glory, while intelligent, full, useful employment of all powers and talents prolongs and preserves the talent of life itself. This complete sanctification marks believers as belonging to God and is to appear openly in a life of holy works and shown allegiance to Christ.
Sanctification takes in intellect, thoughts, mind, speech, words, and tongue, bringing every voice and all of soul, body, and spirit into right relation with God. It is to be asked for directly, that speech, thoughts, and mind be made holy to dwell on heavenly things and to share truth and light with others, with communications that give grace and with solid speech and silence when silence is best. Faith that works through love and purifies the soul brings the whole person under God's will, with every aspiration directed heavenward and the Word shaping practical life, in living, working faith with the help of the Spirit, so that words reveal whether one is under divine control. Readiness for Christ's coming therefore includes daily watchfulness, examining words and conduct, asking forgiveness for sin, and depending on the merits of the crucified and risen Saviour, learning even now to guard the lips and govern the words and to weigh words carefully rather than speak at random.
It takes in the will, the affections, and natural affection, requiring a wholly sanctified will submitted by grace and conversion of body, mind, and soul together. That whole conversion makes a person safe, pure, true, and holy, brings Christ's presence to help in daily work, and is necessary for faithful service, including the work of medical missionaries, to whom God supplies help for every need as they walk and work with pure hearts. It produces the habit and power of self-control in which feelings do not obtain mastery over judgment, since indulging feelings beyond what is lawful spoils life, and letting impulse have its own way in temper, taste, habits, and affection leads into forbidden paths irrespective of consequences, far from God and far from heaven. To be born again and converted in soul and body and spirit brings the character that wins welcome in the courts above and calls for complete reform and change, lifting a confused, darkened understanding out of darkness into light through the sacrifice by which Christ brought the light of life.
The spirit and soul and body name the whole person of nerves and senses as well as conscience and affections, body as well as soul and spirit, all parts of one living machinery to be wisely cared for and considerately treated, because God has respect for the body as well as the soul. Truth is to transform that whole person, and sound spiritual life and faithful service call for care of the body as well as the mind. This truth about the whole person does not justify treating learners as if another person owned all of them, for they are not to be bound to human beings in that way.
Health Temperance and Purity
Biblical sanctification embraces the whole person — spirit, soul, and body — to be kept blameless until the coming of Christ, and this wholeness requires preserving every power in the best possible condition for service to God. Practices that weaken physical or mental strength diminish the offering given to God and unfit a person for His service, while love for God leads to bringing every ability into harmony with the laws that enable obedience to His will. Sinful indulgence and gratification dull the faculties and weaken mental and spiritual perception, hindering consecration, so self-control and temperance belong to sanctification and true consecration cannot be preserved while appetites and passions are indulged at the expense of health and life. Living in conformity to divine law therefore includes regulating appetite and habits according to natural law and refusing harmful indulgence that damages health and weakens the faculties needed to serve God and others.
Appetite and passion must not become master, for indulgence dulls the effect of truth upon the heart, and victory requires temperance and health reform bringing the physical powers into obedience to right principles. This means a wise, simple, plain nutritious diet, discarding flesh meat which indulges appetite at the expense of brain, nerve, and muscle, and putting away tobacco and liquor with beer, wine, tea, and coffee left alone, so that the mind can clearly understand duty and the whole being is aroused in heroic, determined effort with sanctified imagination and awakened conscience. It requires training and disciplining the body and refusing to let inclination control, forbidding both pampering appetite with what merely gratifies the palate and living by a starvation plan under the idea of becoming spiritually minded, but using intelligence to care for health so character becomes symmetrical, mind well-balanced, and work for the Master perfect. When human beings do their part in this religious work the Lord will do His part for them, yet He will not work a miracle to save them from the consequence of indulgence, and only when thus sanctified in body, soul, and spirit together can they do a good work and be fitted for acceptable ministry, with neglect of health reform light calling for reconsecration. Continuing to give liquor to one struggling with it cannot restore God's moral image, so places of help and instruction should support overcoming unnatural appetites and sinful habits including tobacco use and tea and liquor drinking, and young men should be taught to develop perfect manhood so they can teach what is good.
God's law embraces the treatment of the entire being, body as well as spiritual nature, and true religion does not neglect bodily life or its laws but promotes health and well-being in this life as well as readiness for eternal life. Preserving the body consecrated to God's service includes learning its structure and the laws that govern physical life and then putting that knowledge into practice by keeping it clean and healthy in obedience to the laws of life and health. Physical and mental health are necessary to complete development and preservation of mind, soul, body, and spirit in holiness, since obedience to natural laws supports health, peace, happiness, and preparation for the future life, while transgression brings consequences. Sanctification means cooperating with God to break the power of disease and harmful habits, living on a plain, simple, nutritious diet, and using natural restorative agencies together with prayer and trust in God as the restorer of the reasoning faculties, so that unbalanced minds are restored, reformation brings gradual recovery, and salvation is revealed in a happy, holy people whom heaven and angels watch to bless. Such cooperation preserves mind and body to discern sacred truth.
The body as well as the soul must be sanctified and preserved blameless, and being clean in person and pure in heart is necessary for presentation blameless to God through Jesus. Personal cleanliness and purity are part of being wholly sanctified in spirit, soul, and body, for outward uncleanness testifies to what is within and a soul that loves such uncleanness is also defiled. An untidy, unclean person cannot be presented blameless to God, since untidiness and uncleanness are inconsistent with Christian life. Those preparing for Christ's coming must be holy and blameless in their whole lives, pure in heart and life, and this includes orderly, clean habits in dress, homes, and persons, which reflect what is within and affect influence on unbelievers.
Kept Blameless Until Coming
Holiness must be gained in this life before immortality is given, for those not made holy now cannot be saints in heaven. The whole person — body, soul, and spirit — must be wholly sanctified and kept blameless unto the coming of Christ, with the body holy and the spirit pure. This moral fitness must be gained now by turning from harmful habits to Christian temperance and purity, before the body is changed to immortality at the Second Advent. Christ will welcome into the city of God everyone thus prepared, but those unchanged, not putting on His righteousness, will be found wanting before the Judge and have no place there, for nothing defiling can enter. No risk will be run of spoiling the heavenly courts, for there will never be a second rebellion there. This preparing is the subduing power of grace upon the heart, a daily fitting up by daily fighting earthly desires and conquering human tendencies, even exercising sound common sense in diet so appetite does not enslave, while abiding in connection with Christ to be kept from the evil one until He appears and makes the prepared like Himself.
Character defects are to be removed so that believers may stand blameless before the Son of God when He appears. God carries forward this work of perfection in soul, body, and spirit when He is allowed control, cleansing the conscience from dead works to serve the living God for both human good and His glory. Its aim is to make believers vessels fit for honor, prepared to receive the Holy Spirit and the Holy Ghost imparted by God. When this takes place God walks in the midst of His people as a light from heaven, bringing the atmosphere of heaven into the sanctified life. This requires breaking up every selfish method of labor and helping one another as one great converted brotherhood in united self-sacrificing effort to do His will, while rejecting health-destroying indulgences so bodily health and spiritual life grow together in grace by the truth.
The keeping covers the whole person — soul, body, and spirit — placed under God's discipline and subject to the Spirit of truth, with even outward acts such as kneeling in worship testifying to complete submission. Believers are to remain on guard every moment lest adversaries overcome, for Satan seeks the whole person. The Lord will keep those who are on guard so He is not dishonored in any way, giving this keeping through holy angels charged as keepers to stay close beside them. This requires living the truth, barricading principle, acting circumspectly, and watching and praying so as not to enter Satan's snares and temptations and strong delusions in perilous times, obeying the truth for this time and heeding God's warnings. Such daily surrender under the Holy Spirit's control guards against temptation and harmful desires, protects bodily and spiritual health, and keeps believers faithful as the day of God approaches.
The sanctification of body, soul, and spirit is essential for every soul who will enter the kingdom of God, so the training of character means everything. It requires seeking a new heart and making an entire surrender of the affections to God. Sanctified character is built as oft-repeated actions make habits and habits make character, so undervaluing and forgetting little things brings peril and every part of the work is important in God's eyes.
Consecrated Life and Service
Being sanctified wholly is unreserved, entire surrender of body, soul, and spirit to God for His service and glory. It is to be wholly converted and wholly consecrated, giving the whole person inward and outward to be brought under God's control and used by Him as instruments of righteousness in saving souls. It means not living for self or for worldly purposes, not withholding self from full consecration, and having no liberty to do with oneself as one pleases. This is because the whole being belongs to God as His purchased possession, bought with Christ's blood, with the life-blood of His only-begotten Son. When grace takes possession of the heart, inherited and cultivated tendencies to wrong must be crucified, a new life under new control begins, and all that is done, with means, time, intellect, powers and talents, is done for God's glory and in fulfillment of His requirements.
Those who know the truth are thereby made a peculiar and holy people, separate from the world's fashions, practices, dress, language and conduct, distinct by holy character and not by clothing alone. As the believer learns to abide in Christ, no room remains in the heart for selfishness, and in His service is found the fullest satisfaction. Because time is short the entire consecration must be made quickly and the work done quickly. Complete sanctification of soul, spirit and body unto the Lord needs God's converting power every day, and is a real and visible expression of grace and truth within. It is shown in conversation and conduct always revealing meekness, kindness, Christian courtesy, unselfish courtesy, love, humility and faith, with freedom from selfishness.
Where spirit and character, words and actions do not reveal that love, humility and faith, the Spirit of Christ does not abide in the soul, and whatever is contrary denies the Christian profession. God's work is to make the person wholly His, bringing conformity to God in will, temper and spirit, purifying from iniquity, ennobling the whole person, with Christ formed within and the will in harmony with His. This comes by receiving the Saviour's grace, by self surrendered and faith working through love, by daily guidance through God's power and the Spirit's control, so God's work of perfection can continue and the sanctified life reflects heaven's atmosphere. God's love perfected in a person is revealed through this sanctification of the whole person, fulfilling the duty to love God wholeheartedly and neighbor as self, which is the gospel's aim and victory and the whole duty of humanity. The standard of character is found in Jesus' lowly example, not set independently, and this sanctification prepares for the holy society of pure angels in the future life.
Entire sanctification must rule home life above all, and is needed more in the home than in any other place. It is not religion reserved for certain places and occasions and then laid aside at home, but truth as a sanctifier ruling every thought, impulse, word and deed by its power. It makes the home circle the center of the purest and most elevated affections, where peace, harmony, affection, happiness and love are cultivated every day and cherished. Jealousy, anger, envy, evil surmising, evil speaking, impatience, fretfulness, prejudice, vanity, covetousness and selfishness are to be rooted up without delay, through earnestness, patience, prayer and genuine faith warring against evil dispositions and bringing even the thoughts into subjection to Christ. By home life religious life is measured, and whatever makes character lovely in the home will make it lovely in the heavenly mansion.
True religion does not withdraw from care of children, but keeps them well cared for, educates them to good dispositions and modesty, and brings them into the truth. Parents dedicating body, soul and spirit fully to their God-given work are taught by the Lord, given wise words, and helped to exercise patience and forbearance when provoked. The father keeping whole body, soul and spirit in submission to the Lord Jesus makes that complete submission the great ruling principle of the home, receives from above the oil of grace to impart to his children, acts like a Christian gentleman with heaven's refinement, and opens the way for God's miracle-working power and promises, whose truth, grace and holiness are abundant when the human part is acted. The mother's example is to show her children that she obeys the truth, glorifying God with the whole life in body and spirit which belong to Him, needing His help to instruct them and live as a worthy example so she and they may be found without fault in the day of God. Without heeding His Word and cherishing His Spirit a person is none of His, but His grace can make the home a place of peace and rest.
Whole sanctification is an essential qualification for bearing the warning message near the Judgment, for ministry, leadership, teaching, medical, canvassing and literary work. The whole person must be a clean offering, pure and blameless, with heart prepared for faithful service in living connection with God, so life lived in Christ's light has a sanctifying influence on others and Christ supplies strength and grace to live as He lived. Appointed leaders must seek the Lord with humble, broken hearts to discern defects of character and learn individual duty and the mind and will of God, not yielding their seeking until soul, body and spirit are surrendered wholly, when God sanctifies wholly by stamping His image on the soul. Teachers sanctified in every part impress the importance of complete sanctification, schools and sanitariums show Christ's transforming grace in every part of human life, and writers guided by the Holy Spirit reflect purity, elevation and sanctification serving eternal life.
The consecration is individual, daily and immediate, even morning by morning, giving the whole being to God and employing every physical, mental and moral power and talent to His glory in fitness ever growing for His work. The believer accepting Christ commits every part of life to God's work, stays true to conviction, and keeps Christian integrity and love for God and truth undimmed under long trial, bringing glory to His holy name. Where there has been failure it is to be sought from God in prayer for Him to teach how to do it, and those sanctified become channels through which He communicates His life and light. Truth must sanctify soul, body and spirit in reconversion with harmonious action and full consecration, practicing health reform in the family as God's appointed means of saving lives, for when the message is only heard and not received and practiced, self-indulgence brings blindness and loss of discernment leaving believers far behind in genuine faith. This wholly devoted life brings peace, rest, renewed power and usefulness, consoling others even after death, and commits the whole being to a just and merciful God without fear even in facing death.
