1 Timothy 1:11

According to the glorious gospel of the blessed God, which was committed to my trust.

The glorious gospel was committed to Paul's trust as it was to the other apostles, to be preached throughout the world calling people to repentance until the end of the present age. It is the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, and that glory is His goodness, character and righteousness, revealed as God's power to save everyone who believes. It does not make the law void, for there is the most perfect harmony between them: the law condemns the sinner and stands against everything contrary to sound teaching, then the gospel forgives and takes away opposition to the law so that its righteousness is fulfilled in the believer. That glory was lost when man sinned through separation from God, and the gospel is God's unchanging provision for restoring His image in the soul and filling all the earth with His glory through Christ, who is the image of God and the brightness of that glory. That entrusted gospel includes the announcement that God has appointed a day to judge the world through Jesus Christ, belonging to its final work of salvation while mercy lingers, and it is to be proclaimed openly to peoples waiting for it, including by public preaching and by medical missionary work to save souls.

Law and Gospel Harmony

The glorious gospel of the blessed God committed to Paul's trust does not make void the law that stands against criminals. The law is good when it is used lawfully, and in that lawful use it stands against the lawless and disobedient. It identifies sin and exposes guilty conduct as contrary to sound teaching and sound doctrine, including murder, sexual sins, kidnapping, perjury, and every similar unrighteous act. Its purpose is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience and sincere faith, and the gospel does not make the law irrelevant but supplies what people need in order to obey it acceptably.

There is the most perfect harmony between law and gospel, for the law is against every sin named in connection with it and against anything else contrary to sound doctrine according to the glorious gospel, so that the law is against everything contrary to the gospel. The law first condemns the sinner, then the gospel grants forgiveness and takes away the carnal mind or opposition to the law. Then the law witnesses to that work by approving the character so formed. The gospel enables the believer to walk so that the righteousness of the law is fulfilled in him. Finally men shall be judged by the law according to the gospel.

Glory of the Gospel

The gospel is the gospel of the glory of the blessed God, and that glory is His goodness, character, and righteousness. It reveals the same righteousness and glory seen in creation, because it applies God's creative power to save people from sin. In that revealing it is God's power to save everyone who believes.

That glory and character of God was shared with man to give eternal life and everlasting continuance. It was lost when man sinned through separation from God. The gospel is God's provision for restoring His image in the soul of man, so that humanity may again become the temple of God and the glory of God may again be revealed in human flesh. That restoration comes in and through the gift of God's Son to the human family, bringing eternal life to those who receive the Son and restoring to them the privilege of glorifying God.

As the everlasting gospel its unchanging purpose is to fill all the earth with the glory of God after sin caused humanity to lack that glory. It is the gospel of the glory of Christ, who is the image of God and the brightness of His glory, and Christ Himself in the flesh was that gospel. The glory of the Lord was revealed yet veiled in His humanity at His first coming, as prepared by John the Baptist. Through this gospel God will fulfill His unchanging purpose for creation that the earth be filled with His glory, preparing a people for Christ's return when He will be revealed in unveiled glory by teaching them to turn from ungodliness and worldly desires and live soberly, righteously, and godly while they await that blessed hope.

The gospel brings life and immortality to light through the revealing of Christ, and Paul was appointed to preach and teach it to the Gentiles. It is the gospel of Christ as the gospel of God, the power of God made known in Jesus Christ. Its glory is the revelation of God's creative power, the same power displayed in creation working through Christ to save, make people righteous, and transform character.

The gospel is the mystery of God revealed through Christ, God's purpose and love for humanity and the good news of salvation through Christ. In it the mystery of God and the mystery of Christ are one, showing Christ as God with us and God in Christ reconciling the world to Himself. It is the gospel of God's abounding grace and teaches that Jesus of Nazareth is man's only Saviour.

The gospel is the authority Christ gave the church, all that Jesus taught and the whole word of God, centered in Christ dwelling in believers as their hope of glory. Without Christ within, a person has no well-grounded hope. It is the gospel of love, showing God's benevolence and mercy and laying the foundation for human hope. It reveals a glorious and blessed God as joyful tidings pouring the knowledge of God upon every sense through reading His holy word and hearing it proclaimed a thousand times over, so that those with sight and hearing receive far greater light than the blind and deaf, and if one who can learn only by touch still grasps for the Saviour and finds Him, those with full senses who reject the oft-heard message will rise up in judgment to be condemned by her.

Entrusted Gospel Commission

The glorious gospel of the blessed God was committed to Paul's trust as it was to the other apostles, for he shared their commission to preach it. That entrusted gospel was to be preached in the present dispensation, throughout the world, until the end of the present age. That commission called people to repentance and continued until the day God judges the world through Jesus Christ.

That gospel itself includes the announcement that God has appointed a day to judge the world through Jesus Christ. The proclamation that God will judge the world does not replace or follow that gospel, but belongs to its final work of salvation while a brief time of mercy remains before judgment. A message placing the gospel's preaching after the gospel has ended would therefore be another gospel, without a Saviour.

The gospel comes from God, not from human reason, and was committed to trust as God's message. Preaching it means proclaiming God's message rather than human questioning, rationalism and agnosticism.

The glorious good news is to be proclaimed openly and in new openings to peoples waiting for the law of the Lord, including distant islands. This includes free public preaching of the gospel of the blessed God. Medical missionary work spreads knowledge of this gospel through healing the sick, with healing serving the evangelistic purpose of saving souls. Its advance is under God's superintending providence, who directs even wind and sea to preserve and carry the means for its proclamation so that anxious workers are relieved and enabled to go forward.
