1 Timothy 3:15

But if I tarry long, that thou mayest know how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

The verse tells Timothy how he ought to conduct himself in the church, which is the house of God, the church of the living God, God's own household. As the pillar and ground of the truth, the church upholds, supports, witnesses to and founds the truth, serving as its repository and depository. It is Christ's representative on earth, the channel and agency by which He gives light, directs repentant sinners in the way of life and benefits the world, acting by His authority while He remains the source. The true church is made up of those who have God's word and are purified by it, who keep His commandments and live by every word from Him, while churches that reject, shut out or suppress the testimony of God's word can no longer be regarded as His church. Belonging to that church joins believers by high and holy ties under God so that no member is independent, and its calling requires reverent, orderly worship, Christlike love rather than harsh condemnation in its work, honest truthful speech, and united opposition to selfishness and division.

House of God Defined

The house of God is the church of the living God, His own household and family under Him. To name it so is to express confidence in it and in the brethren who serve its cause. Believers are to learn how to conduct themselves within it.

As pillar and foundation of the truth, the church upholds and supports the truth, bearing witness to it and founding it before the world. It is the repository and depository of sacred truth, entrusted to hold, guard, and dispense what God has revealed.

The church is Christ's representative on earth, the channel and agency by which He gives light to men, directs repentant sinners into the way of life, and benefits the world. Christ Himself remains the source, while the church and its appointed ministers act by His authority as channels of communication and help in enlightenment and salvation. It is God's depository and the influence by which the divine benevolence of the gospel is advanced, and it has been given power to propagate itself. It can grow only as it receives and imparts the love Christ brought to the world, with its members as light-bearers to the world.

Belonging to the church of the living God is belonging to fellow believers, joined to them by high and holy ties under God. No member is independent of the church.

True and False Churches

God entrusted Israel with upholding and communicating the truth, but Israel failed in that calling. Its leaders hoarded the truth instead of sharing it, replaced dependence on God with salvation by human works, and turned the religion given to them into a counterfeit gospel. Instead of faithfully representing Him they misrepresented His character and became agents of Satan, while the priests lost sight of what the temple services signified so that the appointed ordinances blinded minds and hardened hearts.

The church of Christ is the assembly of those who have God's word and are purified by it, those who keep God's commandments and live by every word that comes from Him. This stands in direct contrast to those who follow antichrist, break God's law, and lead others to break it. Churches that reject, shut out, or suppress the testimony of God's word and deny people the right to investigate its prophecies can no longer be regarded as constituting Christ's church. The proclamation that Babylon is fallen justified separating from such churches. In 1844 believers who were forbidden to investigate the prophecies or speak of their hope felt loyalty to God required separation from their former churches, and about fifty thousand withdrew that summer.

Christ bought the church with His blood and longs to clothe her with salvation and share His glory with her. He sends His Spirit to change her and make her active in His work, and He has sent abundant light for that purpose. Yet unconsecrated influences can lull her into carnal security, and she can reject the light and resist the grace He longs to give.

Conduct in God's House

Paul was told how to behave in the house of God so that daily life would match membership in God's household, and that instruction is to be studied, practiced, read and obeyed by all who stand on the platform of eternal truth and labor with God to convince those in error. The work entrusted is aggressive, yet it is to be carried on upon Bible principles with Christlike simplicity, patience, forbearance and love for God and for souls. It uplifts Christ and the law of God instead of condemning and hurling thunderbolts, and it refuses to descend to the level of unreasonable and wicked men by employing satanic weapons, strong personal feeling, prejudice or anything that stirs passion and bitter enmity.

The house of God is where His people assemble for worship, and there reverent and orderly conduct is fitting. Reading, whispering, laughing or otherwise distracting others while the words of life are presented is irreverent, and such behavior can harden into habit and influence others to do the same. That same calling to uphold truth and honor worship is violated when money for religious purposes is raised by bazaars, suppers, fancy fairs, lotteries and similar amusements. To desecrate the place set apart for worship with feasting and drinking, buying and selling and merry-making encourages selfish pleasure and love of pleasure, lessens respect for the house of God and reverence for worship in the minds of youth, weakens barriers of self-restraint, and appeals to selfishness, appetite and love of display, which strengthen as they are indulged.

Because the church is the pillar, foundation, witness and ground of the truth, falsehood, deception and deceptive exaggerated claims are contrary to its calling. Truth is to be spoken with one another, for falsehood is sin and not even life is worth buying at its price. Belonging to the church of the living God means belonging to fellow believers joined by high and holy ties under God, with no member independent of the body. A member's conduct can affect the prosperity and influence of the church, so the church has a right to speak when those are at stake, and the church is to stand united and shaped by the life of Jesus Christ, with members opposing selfishness and other harmful traits rather than opposing one another and refusing to let Satan divide them.

To know the pillar and groundwork, all who join the ranks of Sabbathkeepers must become diligent Bible students who can give the reasons for every point of faith from prophetic history brought point by point to the present. That study unites link after link in the prophetic chain from Genesis to Revelation, with Christ as the Alpha, the first link, and the Omega, the last link, of the gospel chain welded in Revelation, especially the sanctuary question and the first, second and third angels' messages. Those thus established know where their feet stand, on unmovable rock and not on slipping sand, and will not soon be moved into an abyss of uncertainty. They come to Scripture with care and determination, are attentive to every sermon and Bible study and to the voice of the Holy Spirit who leads into all truth, open their hearts to receive every principle of truth, and bring those principles into practical life. The mighty pillars of truth must be clung to in order to stand the test soon to be brought to bear, which requires strength from above, seeking God, putting away the spirit of controversy and faultfinding, cherishing humility, love and peace, and exalting the Lord God of Israel and making Him fear and dread.

The church is God's depository of sacred truth and the influence by which the divine benevolence of the gospel is advanced. It is to develop in the true science of salvation, receive and share the light God gives, and represent Christ as an educating power in the world. Its members must bear responsibilities in much greater degree than in the past and have the privilege of cooperating with God, as in establishing a sanitarium that removes prejudice and gives influence to the church. The church grows only as it receives and imparts the love Christ brought, with members as light-bearers, and as Christ's agency for the benefit of the world it has been given power to propagate itself.
