Timothy Reads a Scroll Above Ephesusby emmanuel_higgins

1 Timothy 4:13

Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

The charge is to give devoted attention to reading of Scripture, to public exhortation and urging of truth upon others, and to sound teaching or doctrine. It makes continued study and instruction part of the preparation and work of a servant of Christ. Faithful attention to Scripture and to teaching and exhorting others in this way is essential to the Christian life and to leading people to life.

The words till I come set the time for this attendance as until Paul comes to Timothy. Those who held the charge to reach further taught that till I come means to keep this attention steady until Christ comes.

Though spoken to Timothy, the charge comes to every minister and to every young man and young woman preparing for God's work. It comes as the instruction and education young men attending school should seek to obtain, to every young man purposing to enter the ministry and to every youth engaging in the work as a canvasser or in any other line. It calls them to listen to God's will given through Paul to Timothy in order to make it known. To students it calls for zeal and earnest effort, learning how to study and cultivating industry so that only first-class work comes from the hands.

Giving attendance means learning in God's school, using and developing the gift within and not neglecting the gift given by prophecy with the laying on of hands. It means meditating deeply on these duties, giving oneself wholly to them, taking heed to oneself and to doctrine, and continuing faithfully and carefully in them. This belongs with being an example of believers in word, conduct and conversation, charity, faith and purity, putting on the armor of righteousness, making no provision for the flesh, and refusing selfish projects.

This continued study and instruction sanctifies the worker by its truth and qualifies him to teach others. Searching the Word of the living God in this way is how, and the only way, a worker knows that the hand of Jesus Christ holds his own firmly, so he can walk without fear and work in cooperation with God in working out salvation with fear and trembling instead of slipping while walking even one step in mere human wisdom. Wholehearted devotion means giving time, strength, influence, toil, talent and wealth with zeal, earnest effort and industry, serving under the conditions of the crucified Redeemer in the very last period of earth's history rather than being consumed by temporal tasks that others can handle. When so followed, the worker's profiting and growth will appear to all, and he will save both himself and those who hear him.
