1 Timothy 4:6
If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained. If thou put the brethren in remembrance of these things, thou shalt be a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine, whereunto thou hast attained.
The things to be put before fellow believers include the warning that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith to follow seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, speaking lies in hypocrisy with consciences seared as with a hot iron. They also include practical faith and obedience, Christlikeness, counting the cost of discipleship, and letting patience master passion. To put the brethren in remembrance of these things is what makes one a good minister of Jesus Christ, nourished up in the words of faith and of good doctrine unto which he has attained.
To be thus nourished means to take heed to oneself as well as to doctrine, to watch character, words, and conduct, to preach to oneself while preaching to others, and to be a doer of the word and not a forgetful hearer of one's own teaching. This reminding is done by preaching the Word, with reproof and exhortation. The charge lays its obligation upon every minister of Christ at the present time, and it is urgently needed when people will not endure sound teaching.
One who preaches doctrine without practicing it still needs himself to be taught the first principles of pure doctrine.
