1 Timothy 4:9

This is a faithful saying and worthy of all acceptation.

The declaration that this is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance belongs to the message entrusted to Timothy, to be commanded and taught and set before fellow believers as part of the charge running through 1 Timothy 4:9-16. The trustworthy word so commended is that godliness is profitable for all things, carrying promise both for the present life and for the life to come. It is for the sake of this word that believers labor and endure reproach, because their trust rests in the living God, who is the Saviour of all people and especially of those who believe.

Those placed in responsible positions are thereby directed to work out their salvation with fear and trembling, laboring in cooperation with God rather than in mere human wisdom. The charge calls for a good minister nourished in faith and good doctrine, who refuses profane fables and trains himself in godliness. Even if young, he is to let no one despise his youth but to be an example in word, conduct, charity, spirit, faith and purity, taking heed to character, words, conduct and doctrine, preaching practical faith and obedience first to himself, bearing Christlikeness and practicing what he preaches.

He is to give attention to reading, exhortation and doctrine, not neglecting the gift given through prophecy with the laying on of hands. He is to meditate on these duties and give himself wholly to them, so that his profiting appears to all, and to take heed to himself and to doctrine and continue in them, so that he will save both himself and those who hear him. By searching the Word of the living God the believer comes to know that the hand of Jesus Christ holds firmly.
