1 Timothy 6:12
Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, where unto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, where unto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.
Paul charges Timothy to turn away from love of money and its snares and instead pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience and meekness, and that pursuit is the good fight of faith. Becoming converted does not finish salvation but starts a lifelong warfare with no discharge, to be fought day by day with energy matching the infinite worth of eternal life. The conflict is real war against the world, the flesh and the devil and rulers of darkness, whose hardest part is with unconsecrated self, selfish will, appetite, temper, unbelief and doubt. Laying hold on eternal life is present action by coming to Jesus in faith now, trusting Him as personal Saviour and holding to Him while keeping faith and obedience, since faith works by obedient action and not by works as merit. The fight is won by strength in the Lord with the Word as weapon under Christ as Captain, and those who fight lawfully and hold confidence steadfast to the end receive the crown of immortal life.
Paul's Charge to Timothy
The charge belongs to Paul's dying charge to Timothy, dictated from a dungeon while pressed with infirmities and fearing that wicked Nero would cut his life short before he could see his beloved son in the gospel, whom he had urged to come without delay. It is addressed to the man of God and commands him to fight the good fight of faith and lay hold on eternal life to which he was called and which he had professed by a good profession before many witnesses.
The man of God is commanded to flee the desire to be rich and the love of money, which is temptation and a snare leading into many foolish and hurtful lusts that drown men in destruction and perdition. The love of money is the root of all evil by which some have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows, trading faith and eternal interests for riches rather than remaining faithful. In the latter days this covetousness is joined to departure from the faith after seducing spirits and doctrines of devils, and to profane babblings and oppositions of falsely called science that cause men to err from the faith.
Instead he is to follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness, resisting temptation and pursuing these graces in the struggle of faith. This pursuit itself is the good fight of faith, a determined struggle to remain faithful and to take hold of eternal life as the goal to which Timothy was called. Its profession before many witnesses is to be made true in life by serving under Christ's banner and keeping God's command faithfully.
The charge is given in the sight of God who quickens all things and before Christ Jesus who witnessed a good confession before Pontius Pilate. It commands keeping the commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ. He in His times shall be shown by the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords, who only has immortality, dwelling in unapproachable light whom no man has seen nor can see.
Laying hold on eternal life is joined to charging them that are rich in this world not to be highminded nor trust in uncertain riches but in the living God who gives richly all things to enjoy. They are to do good, be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to communicate, laying up in store a good foundation against the time to come, and in this way lay hold on eternal life. Wealth is not proof of God's favor, and the rich must not trust in riches but trust God and share generously.
Nature of the Fight
Becoming converted does not finish salvation but starts a race and an arduous lifelong warfare with no release and no discharge, and afterward the believer must fight the struggle of faith with determined energy proportionate to the infinite value of eternal life, holding the beginning of confidence steadfast to the end in order to share Christ's self-sacrifice now and all its benefits in future immortal life. The call is to press forward to the mark for the prize of the high calling in Christ Jesus and through difficulties toward the promised prize, resisting temptation and doubt, yielding nothing to the enemy's determined efforts through doubts and questionings, remaining wholly on the Lord's side, doing the work given to do, and having no association with those who would entangle a soul weak toward doubt. Eternal life is to be won and not risked, the chief conflict is with unconsecrated self to be overcome through Christ who loves the fighter, and the time to seek the kingdom and righteousness is now while probation lasts lest the things of this life become deceiving and destroying snares.
The fight is to be carried forward day by day and hour by hour, minute by minute, inch by inch and step by step, pressing from strength to strength and glory to glory without relaxing effort, indolence, or spiritual idleness. It is a vigorous inward process of self-denial and sanctification by believing in Jesus as Saviour and coming to Him in sincerity for grace to help, so that outward works testify that He abides in the heart by faith, with each day overcoming self, praying, trusting God's blessing, and meeting His requirements rather than becoming anxious beforehand about the future time of trouble. The believer wrestles for the crown of life because Satan's grasp is upon the young and the foe is on the right hand and on the left, before and behind, and unless there is wrenching away and trampling him underfoot in the strength of the risen Saviour there will be palsying and ruin, with failure to win the crown meaning loss of everything in this life and the future life. Every soul who would have the crown must engage as an overcomer, fighting faithfully and lawfully with the weapons of God's word by meeting the foe with It is written and keeping the armory well supplied, thereby educating and training the soul for still more severe attacks. Truth, faith and righteousness and the hope of salvation are the armor of the successful warrior whose eyes must be anointed to be keen and sensitive to detect the devices of the enemy, strength comes from being strong in the Lord and in the power of His might and putting on the whole armor of God, and God has made provision to thoroughly equip believers so that His commands and promises are not mockery, with perseverance shown in seeking strength to help others and in pure, true, sympathetic, loving words and actions that help and bless the weak with courage and cheerfulness through trials.
It is a real conflict between man and the prince of darkness and against the world, the flesh, and the devil, against principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world and spiritual wickedness in high places, not against one another, and not to be made easy by compromise. When truth takes possession of the heart the believer is brought into conflict requiring the whole armor of God, facing opposing elements even in his own household and in his own heart, with victory ensured only by the free Spirit of God, and every inch of ground in advancing the divine life is disputed by an antagonistic force requiring girding for conflict by earnest prayer. The conflict becomes earnest when truth begins purifying the soul, and victory requires obedience to God's word rather than a claim of sanctification that excuses knowingly breaking His law, with personal fighting against the powers of darkness, faithful resistance to the devil, and standing ground against evil even under reproach for the truth leading to victory and a conqueror's crown secured at the cost of Christ's agony and blood. The fight is waged while harassed, perplexed, persecuted, denounced, defamed and condemned as Christ was, by casting away false props and false theories and rejecting the words and sayings of men, looking to heaven through the one Mediator for grace, strength and power that heaven waits to answer and never answers in vain, and it demands denying self and following Jesus through evil as well as good report, wrestling against principalities and powers and striving against sin even to resisting unto blood with the sharp sword of the Spirit cutting to the soul. It requires revival of the strait testimony, putting away all sins and cutting off every darling indulgence that hinders religious life, renouncing own wisdom to receive the kingdom as a little child, parting with self-righteousness and chosen worldly associates and the approbation of men, girding the loins of the mind with truth with breastplate, helmet and sword, and breaking free from Satan's deception including lying dreams and the influence of evil angels rather than grieving God's Spirit.
The chief conflict is with unconsecrated self, stubborn will, selfishness, corrupt and sinful habits, unholy desire, appetite and passion, fierce tempers and unlovely traits, impatience, unbelief, doubt, and skepticism. Laying hold by faith only begins the work, and afterward every soul must fight vigorous warfare to overcome corrupt and sinful habits, for the fight is not rest or nonperformance of duty but a stimulant to action, a faith that works by love and purifies the soul from all selfishness. Such genuine faith supplies motive power and changes character, so that a follower in this fight cannot remain sharp in dealing, hard-hearted and without sympathy, coarse in speech, a surmiser of evil, an accuser of the brethren, full of pomposity and self-esteem, overbearing, or harsh in censuring and condemning, but masters impatience and self, resists Satan, and gains victory after victory with ever-growing faith firmly grasping eternal life. The struggle includes determined efforts in the name of the Conqueror to overcome unnatural cravings of appetite as part of taking hold of immortal life, placing the struggler in right relation to life for health, God's favor and a firm hold on immortality rather than death in the conflict, and active struggle against every unholy desire by watching and praying, searching Scripture, avoiding temptation, keeping faith, and obeying God's word in action rather than presuming on the call as a guarantee regardless of conduct. For the tempted, grasping the hope requires choosing with the will to resist and obey God, since belief and promises alone accomplish nothing until the will is set on the right side, and though one may have been overcome and morally degraded, resistance and victory remain possible through Jesus' strength.
The fight includes standing for eternal truth and defending the faith once delivered to the saints against apostasy, deception, false props and false theories, and the words of men, refusing to turn to accommodate a worldly standard. It is a charge to all professing Christians to be firm, spiritual-minded, earnest workers aroused to duty who will not be deceived and will not turn to the right or left, examining themselves through the Word to know whether they are in the faith, holding firm to the beginning of confidence in God's past leadings unto the end rather than following individual choice and inclination, with hearts desiring improvement and correction of wrongs and keeping the commandment without spot until the appearing of the Lord. Contending earnestly means following Christ's path of self-denial by denying appetite and unholy lust, taking hold of eternal life, living up to the calling and public profession, confessing faith openly, and remaining true to the profession made before witnesses. Safety is found only in holding firmly to Bible truth and practicing it rather than depending on human agents or claims, departing from iniquity, deeply searching the sure word of prophecy as counselor, and not turning from the fountain of living waters to drink at broken cisterns.
Following Christ in this fight is not child's play or freedom from conflict or spiritual idleness but sacred obligation, soldier service under Christ's banner and the blood-stained banner of Prince Immanuel, enduring hardship, reproach, trials, and suffering as soldiers endure hardship. Those bought with a price and belonging to God body and spirit for His glory are enlisted to deny self, take up the cross, run the race with persevering earnestness, make energetic movements instead of remaining idlers, do faithful work in the Lord's vineyard, and labor not for food which perishes but for that which endures to everlasting life, working out salvation with fear and trembling and finding enjoyment in victories gained for Christ in earnest, hard warfare against the world, the flesh, and the devil. Gaining eternal life involves ongoing struggle as soldiers of Christ persevering and enduring difficult work and trials for His sake, with victory coming not through ceremonies or display but through simple obedience to God the supreme Leader, freeing from sin's control and from human passions and impulses to overcome self and the powers of evil. Apparent defeats can become victories and wounds and scars are trophies as Paul's were, through continually looking to Jesus for help, putting on the armor and keeping fighting for the faith instead of expecting freedom from trials, with the angel of God going before so souls are helped and receive the truth.
Pursuing the good fight with steady purpose must not become so relentless as to leave no time for rest and quietness of mind.
Laying Hold on Eternal Life
Eternal life is the goal and prize to which believers are called, a future immortal life and immortal crown measuring with the life of God. It is a crown of life of infinite value, worthy of determined struggle and of efforts and sacrifices proportionate to its worth, to be won and run for and striven after to the highest spiritual attainment, and not to be risked for worldly gain or snares. Conversion does not accomplish salvation but begins a race and lifelong warfare with no release, pressing forward to the mark for the prize of the high calling in Christ Jesus with determined energy because immense interests are involved. The struggle is directed by holy ambition to glorify Christ rather than selfish desire for distinction, and Christ rewards each according to work done in His name revealing character formed, not by merit.
Laying hold is present action, coming to Jesus in faith now and receiving the gift He presents with open arms and outstretched hand, asking and receiving, putting the hand in His and following Him. It is trusting Him as personal Saviour who died to redeem and as present help who never lets a seeker seek in vain, the Majesty of Heaven and Commander of all the heavenly host who loved sinners and gave His life for them and is the only hope. It is done without making a bargaining contract with God and without treating Him as doubtful and anxious over whether prayer will be answered, for the exchange was already made in Christ's sacrifice. It is getting a good hold on the better, immortal life through conversion while probation lasts, trusting less in self and no longer letting self occupy thought and attention, but devoting life to God and glorifying Him, digging deep and laying the foundation sure, so that those who lay hold do not drift without an anchor but begin to know happiness in this life. It is availing of the provisions of mercy and appropriating the merits of the life and death of Christ, with blessed assurance of acceptance with the Father as long as the throne of God endures, seen in the rainbow of the covenant and the mercy seat, because the promises of God are yea and amen in Christ Jesus. It is coming just as one is, without plea and without good works to recommend to God, casting the helpless soul wholly upon Christ's merits, feeling the value of His work, hoping in God, resting in His promises whether happy or not, intelligently taking God at His word and believing He accepts as His child, since good emotion is no evidence of sonship nor troubled feelings evidence against it.
It keeps the conditions of salvation, faith and obedience, through cooperation of the human with the divine and through holiness without which no one will see the Lord. It is living faith revealing itself in action, for faith and works go together and each is dead alone, works being the fruit of faith and not the means of saving or paying for redemption, bringing forgiveness to the repentant, justification to the believer, and the crown of life to the faithful unto death, helping believers stand blameless before God. Inheriting it involves denying self, rejecting ungodliness and worldly desires, taking up the cross and following Christ, resisting the devil, striving to enter the straight gate, running with patience, wrestling against spiritual powers, and agonizing in prayer, and those who strive lawfully with divine strength can overcome. Genuine faith acts on trust by taking God at His word and believing He will fulfill His promises because He has said He will, joined to obedience and keeping His commandments and doing what pleases Him, while claiming promises while refusing Christ's works is false faith. Those who believe God for Christ's sake has forgiven sins must press on and not fail through temptation, with simple faith taking God at His word for the free gift of Christ's righteousness imputed without merit of their own, laying hold of divine power that breaks the enemy's power, until life and words declare that the blood of Jesus Christ cleanses from all sin.
It requires earnest, persevering, untiring effort, seeking the Lord at once with no time to lose, choosing eternal destiny without delay, refusing half-heartedness, indifference, sleepiness, ungodliness and unfair dealing, and laying hold on the Holy Spirit and coming out without spot or wrinkle. It is fighting constantly against the enemy's determined efforts to overcome, especially through doubts and questionings, by yielding nothing to temptation, remaining wholly on the Lord's side, resisting temptation and doubt, and pressing through difficulties to the mark of the prize. It means counting the cost, for none succeed except by strenuous effort, spiritually exercising all powers and crucifying the flesh with its affections and lusts, heeding every word of counsel without indifference, teaching this diligence in the family circle, never off guard but watching and praying lest there be entrance into temptation. For those pledged to Christ's service it means diligence as faithful workers doing all possible to win souls, with constant watchfulness to be faithful unto death and keep fighting until warfare ends, when as overcomers they receive the crown of life. It is contending with good courage by refusing Satan advantage on any point, striving for a crown of life and laying up indestructible treasure, pressing the battle to the gates daily through earnest effort, watching and praying and trusting, moving forward step by step in true living faith every day without failing or discouragement, to gain victory and greet the soon-coming Lord with joy as those who overcome by the blood of the Lamb and the word of testimony. It is winning the crown by never laying off the armor or leaving the battlefield until victory is gained and triumph in the Redeemer is possible, safe as long as eyes stay fixed on the Author and Finisher of faith and affections stay on things above, rising higher and higher by faith in the graces of Christ like the dove safe from the hawk only by rising without faltering earthward, growing into His image by daily contemplating His charms and living in communion with heaven where Satan lays nets in vain.
It means being made partakers of Christ's self-sacrifice in this life with assurance of sharing all its benefits in future immortal life, if the beginning of confidence is held steadfast unto the end. God calls believers to strive for this life and will not let go of those who hold to Him in faith as He leads them away from the world and objectionable habits by His grace. Election to it belongs to those who choose the faithful, obedient path of putting on the armor, keeping faith and obeying God, while redemption is offered freely to all. Laying hold requires earnestly praying for God to reveal personal sin and heart corruption to feel need of pardon through Christ's blood, and to reveal Himself, His mercy and the value of His blood, turning from earthly things whose worthlessness is proved and giving up idolized personal appearance where self rules supreme and keeps God from heart and thoughts, which Satan means for destruction and which will prove a curse, and showing real interest in becoming a Christian. It requires forming one's own character, doing one's own religious duties, and gaining one's own victories in life's battles, because no one else can do this work for another, by clinging to God so His wisdom becomes one's own and He is teacher, since disconnecting from God brings certain failure and overestimating self puts salvation at risk and makes humbling necessary.
Called and Good Profession
Eternal life is that to which Timothy and every believer is called, and the public profession made before many witnesses confirms open commitment to the faith. Fighting the good fight of faith means remaining faithful rather than trading faith and eternal interests for riches, resisting the dangers of covetousness and the temptation and snare of desiring to be rich. It is a determined struggle to grasp eternal life, pursued by fleeing the love of money and following after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness. That profession is to be made true in life by serving under Christ's banner and keeping God's command faithfully, keeping the commandment without spot, unrebukable, until the appearing of the Lord Jesus Christ.
The charge is given to all who profess to be Christians to be firm, spiritual-minded, earnest workers aroused to duty, who will not be deceived and will not turn to the right or left to accommodate a worldly standard. It calls for self-examination through the Word of God to know whether one is in the faith, holding the beginning of confidence in God's past leadings firm unto the end rather than following individual choice and inclination. It requires a heart desiring to be improved and set in order so wrongs are corrected. Laying hold on eternal life is joined to charging the rich to trust not in uncertain riches but in God, to do good and be rich in good works, laying up a good foundation, since wealth wisely used as a talent to God's glory saves souls for whom Christ died rather than being selfishly misapplied.
The profession includes the public profession made in baptism, witnessed by the Father, the Son, the Holy Spirit and the heavenly universe in burial in water in the likeness of Christ's death and rising from the watery grave in the likeness of His resurrection to walk in newness of life. Faithful obedience to the truth in that new life makes calling and election sure. Believers make a good confession by living as faithful witnesses for the truth, drawing together with fellow Christians and consecrating the whole life to God. Their conduct — including modest dress and Christlike words and actions — shows that they belong to God while living in the world as pilgrims, placing themselves under the blood-stained banner of Prince Immanuel and making the verse's last clause true before many observers.
The fight of faith is harder when a person is separated from the church and exposed to temptation and Satan's attacks, and binding to God's people helps strengthen faith and remain alert to solemn spiritual realities. Those who profess faith must be true to that profession and set an example that helps tempted or wavering family members, as in the Lord's appeal to the Wessels family. The appeal calls them to choose God rather than mammon and to follow Him in faith and obedience, without making personal advantage the test.
Weapons and Divine Help
The good fight is waged with the weapons of God's Word, meeting the foe with It is written and keeping the armory well supplied with It is written, which educates and trains the soul for still more severe attacks of the enemy. Truth, the Word of God, faith and righteousness, and the hope of salvation are the armor of the successful warrior, and putting on the whole armor of God and the whole armor of righteousness enables standing against the wiles of the devil. The eyes must be anointed to be keen and sensitive to detect the devices of the enemy, for God's Word cannot fail and assurance is found in it because God is true and dependable under all circumstances. Every servant is to arm for defense of the truth that people need, ever ready to unsheath the Sword of the Spirit, to study how to approach people so as to win their confidence, and to take up spiritual armor and move quickly and steadily in Bible order to explain the truth from the Word, with bodily strength devoted to God's service. Those who so obey go with the angel of God ahead of them and become powerful together like an army with banners, taking part in making conquests for Christ and rescuing souls from the power of the enemy with the sure promise that the devil resisted will be put to flight, in order to please Him who called believers to be soldiers.
Strength for warfare with the powers of darkness comes from being strong in the Lord and in the power of His might, striving only according to Christ's working which works mightily within. Human weakness is to be united to Christ's strength and human ignorance to His efficiency, and all striving is to be done in the strength of the risen Saviour and by the free Spirit of God, since God has made provision to thoroughly equip believers so that His commands and promises are not mockery. When truth takes possession of the heart the conflict requires the whole armor of God against opposing elements even in one's own household and heart, with victory ensured only by that free Spirit. Inheriting eternal life by this fight involves denying self, rejecting ungodliness and worldly desires, taking up the cross and following Christ, resisting evil by Christ's grace, and those who strive lawfully with divine strength can overcome. The fight is earnest day-by-day and hour-by-hour self-denial and sanctification within, believing in Jesus as Saviour and coming in sincerity for grace to help, so outward works testify that Jesus abides in the heart by faith, wrenching away from Satan's grasp and trampling the foe on right and left, before and behind, lest believers be palsied and ruined, for there is a crown to be won and failure to win it is loss of everything in this life and the future life.
Christ Himself leads as the mighty General of heaven and Captain of salvation, and those who fight in His delegated service bearing testimony before councils, synagogues, governors and kings must not wage the fight in their own strength to break down opposition but with counted cost and help from on high. They are not left alone, for heavenly angels fight in their ranks, throng heaven's battlements with intense interest, minister as ministering spirits to heirs of salvation, go before believers, and join humble believing people in praise to God and Christ, while the Holy Spirit as Christ's representative aids them and supplies grace. Jesus understands peculiarities of character better than anyone, watches over followers, and if they are willing to be guided throws around them influences for good that enable them to accomplish all His will, surrounding with a wall of light and holiness those who trust in the Lord, so that though sinful, powerless, inefficient and fearful they become more than conquerors by Omnipotence when going forward in faith without failing or discouragement. The fight is watched by a great cloud of witnesses and a crowd of angels bending down to see if the child of God harassed, perplexed, persecuted, denounced, defamed and condemned as Christ was will look through the one Mediator to heaven for grace, strength and power, casting away false props, false theories and the words of men, a demand heaven waits to answer and never answers in vain, with angels close by everyone needing help. It is not carried on in self-sufficiency but in meekness and lowliness with firm faith by the soul feeling its nothingness and relying wholly on the Saviour's merits, apparently helpless yet really invincible, so that God would send every angel to its aid rather than allow it to be overcome, rallying round the Redeemer's banner even under discouraging circumstances to gain new victories and honors.
The fight is fought by continuing to believe God and taking hold of His power rather than waiting for evidence before believing, by living active trust in God's pledged word as a present help in every time of need. It means taking God at His word, trusting Christ's merits and righteousness rather than one's own, staying close to Jesus and clinging wholly to Him with settled determination, which breaks the force of Satan's suggestions and repels the enemy unto victory. Belief and promises alone accomplish nothing until the will is decided and put wholly on the side of faith and obedience, choosing with the will to resist and obey, for until the true force of the will is understood there is constant peril. It is not guided by feelings, impressions and emotions, which are unreliable and not to be trusted, and remembering broken promises and forfeited pledges weakens confidence in self and faith of others. The fight does not come naturally but means gathering up rays of light already given, deciding by weight of evidence of how God is working, and acting on that evidence instead of questioning and demanding everything explained, for those who will not fight decide against God, work against light, and at last fall and sacrifice everything to unbelief.
It requires refusing to absorb unbelief or give instant credence to every suggestion of unbelief, closing the door of the mind against the first intimation of doubt, temptation and skepticism, refusing to reason with Satan but saying Get thee behind me, Satan, and casting oneself unreservedly upon God who with human effort gives spiritual strength to overcome and always provides grace to bear temptation or a way of escape. It means refusing to think or speak unbelief, refusing to stay in darkness when light is offered, refusing for the soul's and Christ's sake to speak one word of mistrust, unbelief or murmuring, having no association with those who would entangle a soul weak toward doubt, and being wholly on the Lord's side while doing the work God gives to do and pressing through difficulties to the mark of the prize. Faith grows by talking faith and improving grace and light already given, keeping thankfulness in the heart and offering praise, singing and making melody in the heart to God as privilege and duty, with words and actions strengthening faith rather than spreading doubt, while talking doubts and cherishing unbelief gathers darkness, unsettles faith and invites Satan close. The first suggestions of skepticism must be resisted prayerfully day by day with earnest struggle, for doubts lead to more doubts and weaken faith while repeated choices grow faith and confidence, and firm faith in the Bible acts as an anchor holding steadfast unto decision of character, contentment, growth in grace and knowledge of truth, and perfected Christian character. Neglecting this fight with self-denial, prayer, Scripture study and freedom from whatever diverts mind and affections from God leaves the soul unstable, vacillating and darkened, in imminent danger of losing hold on God, making shipwreck of faith and perishing with the unbelieving at last.
Jacob's all-night wrestling illustrates the struggle as seeking a changed character and blessing from God through persistent prayer that will not let go without a blessing, persisting even when helpless and clinging wounded and helpless to the Saviour for mercy. It requires uniting the human will to God's will and working in cooperation with Him hour by hour and day by day, with renunciation of self and crucifixion of pride and self-sufficiency and reception of the mind of Christ, laboring yet striving only according to Christ's working within. Victory is not won by human strength but is given by Christ to the helpless, penitent, self-surrendered soul who takes hold of His strength and holds on in steadfast faith, and this faith overcomes the world.
Even when too weak to use the weapons of warfare, when distressing unbelief comes in, hope feels like deception, title to promised blessings is questioned, and terrible doubts and waverings flash into the mind to disbelieve the very existence of God, the fight is kept by reposing in Christ alone as refuge and only hope of eternal life. Fighting and laying hold means coming to Jesus just as one is, without plea and without good works to recommend to God, casting the helpless soul wholly upon Christ's merits as a sinner wanting to be saved, feeling the value of His work, hoping in God, trusting Him, resting in His promises whether happy or not, coming to the Scriptures and intelligently taking God at His word, complying with the conditions and believing He accepts as His child. Awareness of sin and feelings of unworthiness must not sever the confidence connecting with God nor keep from claiming promises and receiving grace, since a good emotion is no evidence of being a child of God and disturbed, troubled, perplexing feelings are no evidence of not being one. The warfare grows difficult in affliction and infirmity when Satan tempts to doubt the Father's love and to feel unworthy of acknowledgment as His child, yet Christ who died with His own precious blood, rose again and intercedes at God's right hand values the believer highly and will not permit such a one to walk alone or be indifferent to weakness, even when the trembling hand of faith can scarcely grasp the promises.
The verse calls to keep struggling courageously for faith even after being tempted and overcome, without losing heart after failure. Hope and courage for that struggle come from Christ's willingness to forgive sins, receive sinners and save the lost. Insisting on extreme, original views in strong, extravagant language, especially attempting to explain the mystery of godliness, puts that perseverance in danger by discouraging those who fall.
Character and Active Service
Fighting the good fight means being molded and fashioned daily by Jesus, clothed with garments of righteousness, putting on Christ and openly displaying His righteousness in practical life with kind courtesy and the peaceable fruits of righteousness. It is continuing with Christ as He leads step by step toward greater conformity to His image until reaching the full stature of His likeness, resting on pardon through faith and growing in thankful love. It is a vigorous day-by-day and hour-by-hour process of self-denial and sanctification within, so outward works testify that Jesus abides in the heart by faith, striving earnestly to reach heaven by coming to Him in sincerity for grace to help. Unlike ancient athletes who trained strictly and ran at risk of life for a perishable crown without certainty, the Christian runs not on uncertainty nor fights as beating the air, but looking to Jesus as Author and Finisher is changed from glory to glory by the Spirit unto victory and the crown, and must wrench from Satan's grasp and trample the foe on right and left, before and behind, in the strength of the risen Saviour, for if the crown is not won everything in this life and the future life is lost. Living active faith must sanctify the soul and bring every thought into obedience, for general belief is not enough.
Genuine faith works by love and purifies the soul from all selfishness, and laying hold by faith only begins the work after which every soul must fight vigorous warfare to overcome corrupt and sinful habits. The fight is not rest or nonperformance of duty nor an opiate to quiet the soul, but a stimulant to action supplying motive power and creating working faith. Such a follower cannot remain sharp in dealing, hard-hearted and without sympathy, coarse in speech, a surmiser of evil, an accuser of the brethren, full of pomposity and self-esteem, overbearing, or harsh in censuring and condemning. It appears instead in meekness, love, humility, self-denial, unselfish concern, kindness and courtesy especially in the family, refusing harsh words, impatience and recrimination, and it cannot spend strength and interest mainly on worldly gain while professing belief in the nearness of the end and the worth of souls for whom Christ died. Claiming to be God's children while failing to do His words denies the profession, and in times of mental weariness and temptation to distrust, the fight is seeking the Lord earnestly and holding steady faith that works through love.
The fight is active persevering labor rather than idleness, running the race with persevering earnestness, doing faithful work in the Lord's vineyard, denying self, taking up the cross and following Christ. It is laboring not for meat which perishes but for that which endures unto everlasting life, as those bought with a price belonging to God body and spirit for His glory, enlisted under Prince Immanuel, working out salvation with fear and trembling and finding enjoyment in victories gained in earnest hard warfare against the world, the flesh and the devil. Divine power combines with human effort, so every muscle and power must be stretched to keep down what would exclude from a pure holy heaven, wrestling with passions, resisting inclination, abasing self and exalting Christ while looking constantly to Jesus to be brought over dangerous ground against Satan's opposition at every step. Counting the cost is required, for none succeeds except by strenuous effort spiritually exercising all powers and crucifying the flesh with its affections and lusts, heeding every word of counsel without indifference, teaching this diligence in the family circle, never off guard but watching and praying against entering temptation, continuing faithful unto death until warfare ends and overcomers receive the crown of life.
That labor includes soul-winning and duty to others, taking up the lifework of bringing others to see the importance of truth, giving God the little time available and the best affections, and giving Jesus a polluted soul to be washed from all stains. It is earnest individual aggressive warfare where eternal interests are at stake, putting on the whole armor of righteousness, resisting the devil with promise he will flee, making conquests for Christ and rescuing souls from the enemy with God and holy angels engaged in the same warfare to please Him who called believers to be soldiers. The church strives, labors, works, fights and prays in faith, ever ready to unsheath the Sword of the Spirit, arming for defense of needed truth and studying how to approach people to win confidence. Christians as soldiers must not settle contented merely because they believe truth but must keep fighting as long as a soul remains to save, pressing to the Source of light and power, keeping the eye fixed on the Author of salvation, bringing more of Jesus into life, character and experience, refusing an earthly worldly mold, true in every position as God's representatives purchased by blood, allowing no cheap mean thought or action, pitching the tent far from Sodom with no attraction in sin and throwing whole intellect, thought and being on God's side.
The fight is carried on by passing along doing work with fidelity without turning right or left, keeping the eye single to God's glory, showing strength of character by self-control and firm check on strong emotion instead of retaliation for injustice and criticism, a conquest of toil, self-sacrifice and noble striving by grace given to all who fight lawfully unto the tree of life in Paradise given to the overcomer. It is fought especially in little things, keeping self-control under petty vexation, discourtesy, careless and provoking words, for Satan as a roaring lion with his angels works to put souls off guard, unsettle, damage friendships, separate friends and imperil souls, so that even those who bear great tests, bereavements and calamities as ordered of God may lose by irritation, wrong words and unwise actions. It is held with hopeful encouraging words rather than gloom, coercion or harshness, building a courageous spirit in Christ that bears lasting fruit, holding faith and courage despite doubts and painful things. Each day's battles must be fought to win the crown of glory, for every day brings nearer home and spiritual knowledge is either lost or gained with no standing still, keeping steadily to duty with patience and determination, not swerving nor giving way to discouragement when integrity is tried beyond expectation, resisting allurements from the grand purpose, bearing God's proving for rich reward, since even young combatants may win by trusting, believing, loving and making Jesus first and best. It requires constant watchfulness and unceasing prayer, consistency between public preaching and private speech, progressive love and growth in knowledge by constant effort at whatever cost to be pure holy undefiled, with control of speech as mark of the perfect man able to bridle the whole body, in continual dependence on Christ to lead, keep and bless.
Physicians and medical workers are to fight perseveringly under the banner of the third angel's message in the cause of truth and holiness, standing firmly and contending until success. They are equipped with God's Word as heavenly armor, relying on Christ their unconquerable Leader who never has been and never can be overcome by evil, and on God's wisdom rather than their own. This active contending is the only security against falling into sin, remaining continually under the molding influence of the Holy Spirit while discharging every God-given duty and taking no burden God has not laid on. Physicians and medical students are to wear that armor in active persevering service for truth and righteousness.
Students, youth and children are to enlist as soldiers of the cross and show real battles fought, doing plainly revealed duty even when against inclination, not letting worldly attraction allure from Christ's service nor Satan's specious allurements in seemingly little transgressions draw away to larger seductions from God. They are to believe in Jesus as Saviour ready to help by grace when sought in sincerity, wrestling for the crown of life and laying hold on eternal life, wrenching from Satan whose grasp is upon the young and trampling underfoot the foe on right and left, before and behind, in the strength of the risen Saviour, or be palsied and ruined, for failure to win the crown is loss of everything in this life and the future life. Those fresh from medical college entering sanitarium work are to reject self-indulgence, questioning of rules, rebellion and polluting college habits that demoralize fellow workers and break down barriers built by thought, effort and prayer, showing instead deportment, diligence in study and business and connection with God fitting grave responsibility, building on Christ as sure foundation and chief cornerstone, doing good, rich in good works, ready to share, laying up a good foundation against time to come. In youth laying hold means choosing eternal things, preparing for difficulties, resisting neglect of spiritual duties, preserving integrity and purity even at sacrifice, and taking stand for truth even against wishes of close friends or relatives.
Parents are to fight the good fight every day in the home, helping children gain victories, talking of heaven and desire for them to be there, surrounding them with an atmosphere of love that subdues stubborn dispositions, with Christ cooperating to win children to Him. Laying hold is a present home work where fathers and mothers by grace bring children to Christ, teach the Bible requirement and take up soul-saving work instead of throwing it on others, showing a reality neighbors can mark, not scolding which works against God, but taking children aside, talking kindly, kneeling hand in hand, praying for them and telling them of opportunity to pray for themselves so blessing rests there and seasons are not forgotten, whereupon children bend energies where parents lead and school profits them more. Those just beginning as disciples specially need watch-care and counsel of faithful parents, confiding trials and griefs to learn sympathy, prayer and encouragement to press on in the way of life trusting God. Children are to be educated and characters shaped in home training to lay hold on eternal life.
Laying hold is urged upon the self-sufficient rich man devoted to money-getting when genuinely converted, whom God reaches through faithful human agents and the Holy Spirit to bring men of responsible place, intellect and influence to divine principles. Beholding Jesus in loveliness, self-denial and self-sacrifice, he sees himself in contrast as wretched and miserable and poor and blind and naked, becomes small in his own estimation, prefers Christ to self and lays hold on eternal life, then becomes an agent communicating light with special burden for that neglected class, consecrating time and money, bringing means into the treasury, converting talent and influence to truth and adding efficiency and power to the church. Worldly riches cannot secure the lasting inheritance, and investing entrusted money in gospel work through self-denial and giving all to Christ helps lead others to eternal life while fighting faithfully through hardship until rest is given.
Specific applications forbid sacrificing truth to please another in marriage, calling the weakened soldier to arouse anew and engage for everlasting life when prepared to compromise faith and allegiance with ruin ahead, for selling the soul cheap for present peace is forbidden, safety lying in keeping with brethren for strength to remain in truth while still doing all possible to make a spouse happy without sacrificing principle through forbearance, patience, true courtesy and the power of grace. Joining an unbeliever places the believer on Satan's ground, giving easy access for shafts of temptation, grieving the Spirit and forfeiting protection, with no concord between Christ and Belial, adding a weight that retards progress on the steep rugged path as a pleasure-lover draws thoughts from Jesus, leaving terrible odds in the battle for everlasting life, and faithfulness requires being as true as steel to marriage vows. The continual fight includes denying self to escape debt, putting away pride, suspicion, jealousy and malice for a humble willing spirit with Jesus' help. For the intemperate God presents strong hope of eternal life to be laid hold of now without losing opportunity, fastening grasp by faith on Christ as mighty Helper with personal power and will on the Lord's side, for without self-effort and decided will invitation is useless, yet the fallen weak degraded may resist and overcome appetite in Jesus' strength, through His merits become heir of immortality with elevated thoughts, purified heart and heavenly life, regain true manhood, shine as light and at last hear Well done, turning by total abstinence from liquor, tobacco and harmful indulgences and giving the money to prepare children and youth for useful lives among both poor depraved and higher classes enslaved to habit.
The struggle is directed by holy ambition to glorify Christ, not selfish desire for distinction or supremacy, striving for highest spiritual attainments and running to obtain the immortal crown, with each rewarded according to work not by merit but in proportion to work done in His name revealing character formed. It requires the Spirit to control inclinations and desires, wholehearted consecration and single purpose of glorifying God without divided heart through daily attention to His direction. It means pressing the battle to the gates daily with good courage, refusing Satan advantage on any point, striving for a crown and laying up indestructible treasure through earnest effort, watching, praying and trusting, moving step by step in living faith without failing or discouragement unto victory to greet the soon-coming Lord with joy as overcomers by the blood of the Lamb and word of testimony, faithful unto death.
Reward and Final Victory
Those who fight lawfully receive the grace of Christ now, and as overcomers receive the tree of life in the midst of the Paradise of God. Fighting in this sense means passing along doing work with fidelity, not turning to the right or left, keeping the eye single to the glory of God, and showing strength of character by self-control and a firm check on strong emotion instead of retaliation for injustice and criticism. It is conquest, toil, self-sacrifice, and noble striving for victory by the working Christian. Every believer is called to this fight on a rough path against the powers of darkness by witnessing, letting light shine before men, living Christ, and exercising every faculty and power given by God, not only ministers or eloquent speakers. The fight is not fought alone, for Christ Himself, the Majesty of heaven, leads as General, and thousands of holy angels wait to help all who are seeking immortality and eternal life. A crown of glory waits for all who fight, and when the warfare is over they receive right to the tree of life by doing His commandments and entrance through the gates into the city, then cast their glittering crowns at the feet of Jesus in worship with music.
Fighting the good fight on this earth in a life hidden with Christ brings shining forth with the Redeemer's glory in the kingdom of God in the New Jerusalem. That city is built as a place of rest where sadness, wailing, sorrow, crushed hopes and buried affections end. There garments of heaviness are changed for the wedding garment, and the fighters witness the coronation of the King. Seeing Him in whom hopes of eternal life are centered will make all trials and sufferings of this life as nothingness. Faithfulness to Christ on earth is what prepares for that shining with His glory.
Laying hold on eternal life means work does not cease with this life; believers may rest for a little while in the grave and then, when the call comes, take up their work once more in the kingdom of God. Those who have fought this good fight will receive glorious rest in heaven, where they will have the youth and vigor of immortality and will no longer contend with sin and Satan after hard, wearisome earthly toil as weary and heavy laden contenders. That rest is not inaction, idleness, eternal indolence or eternal inactivity, but a place of interested activity and active service, which alone is heaven to energetic workers for whom eternal inactivity would be irksome. The warfare is carried on by servants rallying round the banner of the Redeemer even under apparently discouraging circumstances, watched by all heaven, with all the angels at the service of humble believing people and the choir above joining songs of praise and thanksgiving to God and to His Son. It is not carried on in self-sufficiency but in meekness and lowliness with firm faith, by the soul that feels its nothingness and relies wholly on the merits of the Saviour, made apparently helpless yet really invincible, so that God would send every angel in heaven to its aid rather than allow it to be overcome.
Laying hold belongs to a life of faithful struggle and patient endurance in which those who share in Christ's suffering will reign with Him. The hope of immortality at Christ's appearing does not remove the call to suffer for God, for God's people have endured affliction throughout history and the redeemed have come through great tribulation, so no one reaches the promised reward without choosing to suffer affliction with God's people rather than shrinking from it. Paul's victories in this struggle toward the immortal crown are worth celebrating, yet he does not boast of attainments but keeps pressing heavenward with the prize in view as example for every follower, sustained by the hope that supported him through labors and trials and to be held fast. Those who suffer for God's name run the race with patience. Those who fight will be taken by Christ when He comes, and the conflict will then be forever ended.
Christ rewards each person according to work — not because the reward is earned by merit, but in proportion to work done in His name, which reveals the character formed. The struggle is directed by holy ambition to glorify Christ, not by selfish desire for distinction or supremacy, with eternal life pictured as an immortal crown to be run for and grasped by striving for the highest spiritual attainments. Believers bear reproach and meet difficulties by standing in God's strength, not by relying on human sympathy or praise, working with strong faith and hope and cooperating with God rather than choosing selfishness and ease. Refusing that work risks losing the future immortal life. God gives talents not chiefly for personal enrichment but to be put to use and become part of a good foundation for the time to come. Eternal life is a future, immortal life to be laid hold of by living the life of Christ in this world with diligent effort and devoted use of every faculty, ability and resource entrusted by Jesus in service to God rather than self, so that faithful service, obedience and carrying out the duties of this life, including care for how words and actions affect others rather than living as though life were one's own, bear on eternal destiny and decide it.
Eternal life includes living forever in the city God has prepared in the earth made new, free from earthly suffering and heartache, entered by hiding the life in Christ through living faith. Those who obey God's Word give evidence that they believe His promises, and by proving true and faithful they can confidently lay hold on eternal life and receive strong consolation from those promises. Laying hold means making preparation for a better world the great burden of life while living in a world where death reigns and loved ones may be removed at any moment. This right hold requires controlling the feelings, and it does not disqualify a person for living in this world and nobly bearing life's burdens, but helps in the performance of self-denying, self-sacrificing duties.
Knowing that the striving is for eternal life strengthens and comforts, and the Lord Jesus becomes light, strength, and crown of rejoicing to those who overcome. Reaching for eternal life means gaining the positively essential victory over the stubborn will, self, and selfishness, won only by Christ's aid, grace and power through unreserved surrender, taking Christ as helper and yielding the will to His will. Victory comes victory after victory, day by day, by living His life in self-sacrifice at every step and constantly revealing stronger sympathy for those in need, learning better how to conquer self and strengthen weak points until God's ideal is reached and the root of selfishness is utterly destroyed. A person may be defeated at times, but defeat can turn to victory by trusting less in self and pressing onward in Jesus' name with greater humility, stronger faith, undying courage and growing love, each step directed toward Jesus. Apparent defeats can thus become victories, and the wounds and scars of enduring hardship as soldiers of Christ while continually looking to Jesus for help and meeting the enemy become trophies of victory, as Paul's were.
The fight is the final conflict between truth and error, carried on under Christ's banner, where faithfulness brings eternal honor because truth will triumph. The call to make sure work for eternal life is urgent because probation is closing, and this faithful work glorifies God and helps save souls for whom Christ died. Young men and women are called to enter God's service and go forth with strong arms and brave hearts into this conflict of faith that all must enter, tasting the blessedness of self-sacrifice, constantly learning of Christ the Great Teacher, and bringing earnest desire to learn how to bear responsibilities, with the Lord opening ways before those who respond. The conflict will grow more and more severe as the closing struggle is approached.
