1 Timothy 6:3
If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness; If any man teach otherwise, and consent not to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness;
Sound teaching is consent to the wholesome words of Jesus Christ and to the doctrine which is according to godliness. Anyone who teaches otherwise and does not consent to that teaching is proud and knows nothing. That rejection turns aside to an unhealthy craving for disputes over words, producing envy, strife, insulting language, evil suspicions, conflict, and corrupt thinking.
The verse exposes as error the supposition that material gain is godliness. True gain is godliness joined with contentment. It warns against valuing riches as proof of personal superiority or spiritual worth, and against treating wealth as proof of godliness or of God's favor.
Applied to the Wessels family, the verse warns that worldly business and love of money endanger faith and the inheritance of eternal life. It calls for undivided loyalty in following the Lord's teaching rather than letting worldly interests divide allegiance. That loyalty means choosing whom to serve and making choices that help rather than hinder the faith of others.
