The Lord Appears to Solomon in a Dreamby KandD

2 Chronicles 1:10

Give me now wisdom and knowledge, that I may go out and come in before this people: for who can judge this thy people, that is so great?

The verse records Solomon asking God for wisdom and knowledge to carry out his work as king, to lead, govern, and judge God's great and numerous people. The request comes from his recognition of his own inexperience and inability to bear the weight and responsibility of kingship without divine help, feeling unable to carry the great responsibilities of ruling Israel and judging a people too numerous to count. What he seeks is an understanding heart to discern between right and wrong and between good and evil. He seeks it so he can govern justly, judge rightly, lead the people well, and serve them faithfully.

He does not ask for personal honor, riches, long life, or victory over enemies, but for ability to serve. God grants his request by giving him a wise and understanding heart. Obedience to God's commands would establish his reign and make Israel a wise people whose example would enlighten surrounding nations. The verse teaches that all who are given leadership responsibility should likewise seek wisdom for the work entrusted to them.
