2 Chronicles 1:11
And God said to Solomon, Because this was in thine heart, and thou hast not asked riches, wealth, or honour, nor the life of thine enemies, neither yet hast asked long life; but hast asked wisdom and knowledge for thyself, that thou mayest judge my people, over whom I have made thee king:
God approved what was in Solomon's heart when he asked for wisdom and knowledge, a wise and understanding heart, to judge, govern and serve God's people over whom God had made him king. He did not ask for riches, wealth, or honor, nor for long life, nor for the life, death, defeat or victory over his enemies. His request grew from desire to fulfill his responsibility as king, feeling unable to bear its great weight alone. He valued that gift above earthly good so that he might rule justly. He also desired wisdom to carry out the work of building the temple in Jerusalem.
Because wisdom and knowledge for his God-given task was his heart's desire, God granted that request and gave him wisdom and knowledge, a wise and understanding heart. God also gave and promised him exceptional riches, wealth and honor that he had not asked for. Knowing and serving God's purposes is thus greater than worldly power or possessions. The lengthened days held out with the promise were conditional, depending on walking in God's ways and keeping His commandments, and faithful rule would establish his throne and make Israel a wise and understanding people who would be a light to surrounding nations.
