Solomon Prays at the Bronze Altar at Gibeonby emmanuel_higgins

2 Chronicles 1:7

In that night did God appear unto Solomon, and said unto him, Ask what I shall give thee.

In that night God appeared to Solomon in a dream at Gibeon and invited him to ask what should be given to him. The appearance came at night, and the invitation was open, to ask for what he wished to receive.

Solomon asked for wisdom and understanding and knowledge to carry out his God-given work of leading and governing and judging God's numerous people. He sought what was needed to judge God's people and to serve the great multitude entrusted to him.

He did not ask for riches, wealth, honor, victory over enemies, or long life. Riches and wealth and honor and triumph and length of days were all set aside in favor of wisdom and knowledge for his task.

The Lord was pleased with this choice because wisdom and knowledge were in his heart. He granted the request and gave him a wise and understanding heart with exceptional wisdom.

Along with wisdom, God also gave him riches, wealth and honor that he had not asked for, in exceptional measure. The added gifts exceeded what was sought and came unasked alongside the wisdom granted.

God's gifts came with the condition of walking in His ways and keeping His commandments. With that obedience came the promise to lengthen Solomon's days if he did so. The verse thus teaches the lesson of seeking what is needed to serve others well.
