2 Chronicles 1:9
Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude. Now, O LORD God, let thy promise unto David my father be established: for thou hast made me king over a people like the dust of the earth in multitude.
The verse is Solomon's prayer at the beginning of his reign, asking God to establish and fulfill the promise made to David his father by setting Solomon as king in David's place over Israel. In it he acknowledges that God himself has made him king over a people vast in number, like the dust of the earth in multitude, too numerous to count. That sense of the greatness of the people entrusted to him leads directly into his request for the wisdom and knowledge needed to govern them well.
In answer God grants Solomon wisdom. God promises to be with Solomon as He had been with David. God promises that Solomon's throne will be established if he walks uprightly in God's ways and obeys and keeps His commands. God promises Solomon long life on that same condition of walking in God's ways and keeping His commandments.
The purpose of such obedient rule is that his reign would help make Israel a wise and understanding people and a light to the surrounding nations. Those studying the verse are to share the spirit and sentiments Solomon shows in it.
