2 Chronicles 10:16
And when all Israel saw that the king would not hearken unto them, the people answered the king, saying, What portion have we in David? and we have none inheritance in the son of Jesse: every man to your tents, O Israel: and now, David, see to thine own house. So all Israel went to their tents.
When Rehoboam would not hearken to the people's request, Israel answered the king by rejecting the rule of the house of David. The people disavowed any portion in David and any inheritance in the son of Jesse, and dismissed every man to his tents, calling on Israel to return home. That withdrawal of allegiance divided the kingdom into two separate peoples. Judah and Benjamin remained under Rehoboam, while the ten northern tribes formed the kingdom of Israel under Jeroboam. This revolt fulfilled the prophet's prediction of the rending of the kingdom, and it took place within God's purpose.
