2 Chronicles 10:4

Thy father made our yoke grievous: now therefore ease thou somewhat the grievous servitude of thy father, and his heavy yoke that he put upon us, and we will serve thee.

During Solomon's apostasy his extravagance led him to tax the people heavily and require much menial service. His oppressive rule subjected them to heavy taxation and harsh forced labor and menial service, with heavy labor and other burdens laid upon them. Israel's tribes therefore came to the new king Rehoboam asking him to ease and reduce those grievous burdens of oppressive service and taxation that Solomon had put upon them. Their request was for relief from harsh forced labor and heavy burdens imposed under Solomon.

They promised to serve Rehoboam if he granted that relief. Easing of their burdens was made the condition of their continued loyalty and service to him.
