And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife, and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse; And Rehoboam took him Mahalath the daughter of Jerimoth the son of David to wife, and Abihail the daughter of Eliab the son of Jesse;
The terms son and daughter in this verse need not mean an immediate child but can denote a descendant several generations removed. Eliab was David's eldest brother, so his daughter Abihail belonged to the generation before David's own children. More than eighty years had passed since David began to reign at age thirty, making it impossible for her to be Eliab's immediate daughter in Rehoboam's time. Abihail called the daughter of Eliab was therefore his granddaughter or great-granddaughter.
