Thus saith the LORD, Ye shall not go up, nor fight against your brethren: return every man to his house: for this thing is done of me. And they obeyed the words of the LORD, and returned from going against Jeroboam. God directed Rehoboam and his people not to go up and fight against the northern tribes, for those tribes were their brothers, and every man was to return to his own house rather than attempt to restore the kingdom to himself by force. The prohibition rested on the fact that the rending of the kingdom was from God himself. Rehoboam and the people obeyed the words of the Lord and turned back from going against Jeroboam.
