Rehoboam Holds a Bronze Shieldby emmanuel_higgins

2 Chronicles 12:9

So Shishak king of Egypt came up against Jerusalem, and took away the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house; he took all: he carried away also the shields of gold which Solomon had made.

Shishak's invasion of Judah was divine punishment for apostasy and unfaithfulness. He came up against Jerusalem and plundered it, taking away the treasures of the king's house, including the shields of gold which Solomon had made. He also carried away the treasures of the house of the Lord. To replace what was lost, Rehoboam made shields of brass in place of the gold shields.

The exchange of gold for brass marked the loss of the wealth and splendor associated with Solomon's reign. Because the people humbled themselves, Jerusalem was spared complete destruction and Rehoboam was not destroyed altogether. The loss nevertheless left the nation subject to Egypt. Judah also experienced a measure of relief as the Lord turned His wrath away.
