2 Chronicles 13:5
Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt? Ought ye not to know that the LORD God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David for ever, even to him and to his sons by a covenant of salt?
Abijah of Judah spoke the words during his war with Jeroboam of Israel, invoking the divine grant to warn Israel not to fight Judah because to oppose the Lord will not prosper. The warning stood within the larger account of Jeroboam's reign in Israel and the war between Israel and Judah, in which Judah won. The Lord helped Judah win a decisive victory and Israel was defeated in the ensuing battle. The declaration is that the Lord God of Israel gave the kingdom over Israel to David and to his sons forever.
A covenant of salt is a solemn, enduring, incorruptible, permanent, everlasting and unbreakable covenant. Salt represents harmony, lasting friendship and peace, preserving and strengthening the bond of union between the parties and promoting peace. Salt also represents God's grace in the heart, which preserves and strengthens the bond of union.
Salt's symbolic associations with blood and life help explain the covenant and related biblical rites. Salt in the sacrifices represented the saving qualities of Christ's righteousness. By that token the covenant bound the people to Jehovah in a solemn, enduring covenant.
The covenant will be fulfilled through Christ, David's descendant, and neither party will break it. A solemn covenant formed under the guidance of the Holy Spirit is therefore to be treated as a covenant of salt.
