2 Chronicles 14:8
And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour. And Asa had an army of men that bare targets and spears, out of Judah three hundred thousand; and out of Benjamin, that bare shields and drew bows, two hundred and fourscore thousand: all these were mighty men of valour.
The record lists 300,000 men from Judah bearing large targets and spears, and 280,000 men from Benjamin bearing shields and drawing bows. Together they formed a force of 580,000, and all are described as mighty men of valor.
They were not a hasty levy but a trained and well-equipped army, the fruit of Asa's work in drilling his soldiers and putting Judah in readiness for conflict. Their weapons were prepared, their divisions were organized by tribe and armament, and their courage was proven.
When the Ethiopians invaded with a much larger host, Asa refused to make that army his confidence. He did not rest on the number of his soldiers, on their strength and valor, or on the fortifications he had built. His reliance for deliverance was placed wholly upon God.
