2 Chronicles 16:12
And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians. And Asa in the thirty and ninth year of his reign was diseased in his feet, until his disease was exceeding great: yet in his disease he sought not to the LORD, but to the physicians.
This verse records the final step in Asa's turning from the Lord, after he relied on the king of Syria instead of relying on the Lord his God, and when reproved for it became angry at the reproof, put the seer in prison, and oppressed some of the people. In the thirty-ninth year of his reign he suffered a very severe disease in his feet. That foot disease is an early example of gout, a malady associated with kings.
In his illness he did not seek the Lord but sought help only from physicians. He died in the forty-first year of his reign. He was succeeded by his son Jehoshaphat.
Following one's own judgment contrary to the will of God is no light matter, and the Lord will trouble any person, whatever his former calling, who turns from Him and exalts those who dishonor the truth and spoil the faith of God's people, dealing with them according to their works. It is a call for medical missionary workers to vindicate the truth and to refuse to be led and guided by sophistry.
