2 Chronicles 16:13

And Asa slept with his fathers, and died in the one and fortieth year of his reign.

Asa died in the forty-first year of his reign. His son Jehoshaphat succeeded him as king. His death came after a long record of faithful service that was marred by turning from the Lord after former faithfulness.

He had relied on the king of Syria instead of relying on the Lord, was told he had acted foolishly and would have wars from then on, and in anger at the rebuke put Hanani the seer in prison while oppressing some of the people at the same time. In the thirty-ninth year of his reign he became diseased in his feet until the disease became exceedingly severe, yet he sought help from the physicians rather than seeking the Lord. His end warns that following one's own judgment contrary to God's will is no light matter, for the Lord will bring trouble and repay according to their works anyone, regardless of former calling, who turns from Him.
