2 Chronicles 16:2

Then Asa brought out silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the LORD and of the king’s house, and sent to Ben-hadad king of Syria, that dwelt at Damascus, saying,

Baasha king of Israel built Ramah and seized it to allow none to go out or come in to Judah, blocking movement to and from Judah and threatening it. Asa took silver and gold out of the treasures of the house of the Lord and out of the king's house and sent them to Ben-hadad king of Syria who dwelt at Damascus. He sent this treasure to secure an alliance and aid, buying Ben-hadad to break his league with Baasha so that Baasha would depart from him.

The act meant relying on the king of Syria, a foreign king, and not relying on the Lord his God alone. In doing so he turned from God to follow his own judgment contrary to the will of God. This was a failure to trust God for deliverance in his time of need, unlike his earlier reliance on God when facing a great enemy. He was rebuked by the prophet because he relied on Syria rather than on the Lord, and his choice was foolish.

Although Ben-hadad then attacked Israel and Baasha stopped building, the choice brought God's displeasure, loss of victory over Syria, and wars from then on. The verse warns all who suppose it a light matter to defy the Lord God of Israel, who exalt men who dishonor truth and spoil faith, and who are led by sophistry instead of vindicating truth. The Lord will trouble them and deal with them according to their works.
