2 Chronicles 16:3

There is a league between me and thee, as there was between my father and thy father: behold, I have sent thee silver and gold; go, break thy league with Baasha king of Israel, that he may depart from me.

Asa took silver and gold out of the treasuries of the house of the Lord and of the king's house and sent it to Ben-hadad king of Syria to pay him to break his league with Baasha king of Israel, that Baasha might depart from Judah. Ben-hadad hearkened to him and attacked Israel, so Baasha left off building Ramah and withdrew from his work against Judah. By seeking military deliverance through this Syrian alliance when threatened, Asa relied on the king of Syria instead of trusting God alone in his time of need, following his own judgment contrary to the will of God and turning from Him.

In this course he did foolishly, and from that time onward he would have wars. His failure in the alliance was afterward rebuked by the prophet Hanani. The episode stands as a warning that it is no light matter to follow one's own judgment contrary to the will of God, for the Lord will trouble any man who turns from Him and defies Him, and will deal according to works with those who exalt men who dishonor truth and spoil faith, calling His workers to vindicate truth and refuse to be led by sophistry.
