2 Chronicles 16:7
And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said unto him, Because thou hast relied on the king of Syria, and not relied on the LORD thy God, therefore is the host of the king of Syria escaped out of thine hand. And at that time Hanani the seer came to Asa king of Judah, and said unto him, Because thou hast relied on the king of Syria, and not relied on the LORD thy God, therefore is the host of the king of Syria escaped out of thine hand.
Baasha king of Israel built Ramah against Judah and seized it as an attack on Judah. In that crisis Asa took silver and gold from the house of the Lord and from his own house to hire Benhadad king of Syria to break his league with Baasha, relying on Syria instead of relying on the Lord his God for deliverance. This was a failure of faith and trust, in contrast to Asa's earlier reliance on God which had brought victory and deliverance over a much larger enemy, the huge Ethiopian and Lubim armies. Hanani the seer rebuked Asa because he had relied on the king of Syria and not on God, and therefore the host of the king of Syria had escaped out of his hand, meaning Asa had foolishly thrown away the opportunity to defeat that army.
The rebuke teaches that God looks throughout the whole earth to strengthen those whose hearts are wholly devoted to him. Asa had acted foolishly and as a result would face further wars. Asa responded to the rebuke with anger, imprisoned Hanani, and oppressed some of his people.
Following one's own judgment contrary to the will of God is no light matter, and the Lord will trouble any person regardless of former calling who turns from him and defies him. God will deal according to their works with those who exalt people who dishonor the truth and spoil the faith of God's people. The verse calls medical missionary workers in the present time to vindicate the truth and to refuse to be led and guided by sophistry.
