2 Chronicles 17:8
And with them he sent Levites, even Shemaiah, and Nethaniah, and Zebadiah, and Asahel, and Shemiramoth, and Jehonathan, and Adonijah, and Tobijah, and Tob-adonijah, Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, priests.
The verse lists the Levites Jehoshaphat sent by royal appointment together with princes and priests to instruct Judah, with the Levites working under the direct supervision of the princes and accompanying the officials appointed for the work. With the book of the law of the Lord they went throughout all the cities of Judah teaching all the people thorough instruction in the law of God and the Holy Scriptures. The instruction was given because safety lay in understanding the law, and learning God's requirements and conforming life to them safeguards against apostasy and rebellion and makes people loyal to God and to man.
The arrangement shows that Israel had a school in every church and that the Levites served as teachers. As many endeavored to understand God's requirements and to put away sin, a religious revival was effected among the people. This care for the spiritual needs of his subjects brought Jehoshaphat much of his prosperity as a ruler and belongs to the account of his obedience and the favor that followed, for in obedience to God's law there is great gain. Conformity to the divine requirements has a transforming power that brings peace and goodwill among men, makes God's word the controlling influence in mind and heart, removes national and social evils, sends out from every home an influence that strengthens spiritual insight and moral power, and places nations and individuals on vantage ground.
