A Levite Teaches the Law in a Judean Townby emmanuel_higgins

2 Chronicles 17:9

And they taught in Judah, and had the book of the law of the LORD with them, and went about throughout all the cities of Judah, and taught the people.

In the third year of his reign Jehoshaphat by royal appointment sent princes and Levites to instruct the people, with faithful teaching priests working under the direct supervision of the princes in charge of different parts of the realm, traveling through all the cities of Judah. The teachers carried the book of the law of the Lord with them from city to city and taught the people, so that thorough instruction in the Holy Scriptures was provided throughout the land. This provision was as a school in every church. This teaching belonged to his walking in the first ways of David, seeking the Lord God of his father and not Baalim, walking in His commandments and not after the doings of Israel, lifting up his heart in the ways of the Lord, and taking the high places and groves out of Judah.

The people needed teaching in the law of God, and safety lay in understanding it, safeguarding them from the evils that had led to apostasy and rebellion. Conforming life to the law's requirements would make them loyal both to God and to man, as loyal and law-abiding subjects. As many tried to understand God's requirements and to put away sin and lessen transgression, a religious revival was effected. To this wise provision for the spiritual needs of his subjects Jehoshaphat owed much of his prosperity as a ruler. Because of this obedience the Lord established the kingdom in his hand, Judah brought him presents, he had riches and honor in abundance, and the fear of the Lord fell on all the surrounding kingdoms so that they made no war against him.

Obedience to the Lord always brings favor and great gain, faithful discharge of righteous principles bears the divine credentials, and conformity to the divine requirements has a transforming power that brings peace and good will among men. If the teachings of God's word were made the controlling influence in every life, with mind and heart brought under its restraining power, the evils now in national and social life would find no place. From every home would go an influence making men and women strong in spiritual insight and moral power, placing nations and individuals on vantage-ground. The Lord is dishonored when stewards and guardians of God's flock sustain and sanction an evil work. The verse also illustrates the work expected of God's people at the close of earth's history: to walk in the fear of the Lord and live in a way that convinces unbelievers of Christ's grace.
