And now I have sent a cunning man, endued with understanding, of Huram my father’s,
The verse introduces a skilled craftsman endowed with understanding whom the king of Tyre sent to Solomon to help build the temple. The mention of Huram's father means that this craftsman belonged to the household of Hiram's father. His mother was from the tribe of Dan and his father was a Tyrian from Tyre.
Through his mother he was descended from Aholiab, to whom God had given special wisdom for the construction of the tabernacle. He led the making of the temple furnishings and was able to work in gold, silver, bronze, iron, stone, wood and fine fabrics, performing engraving and other detailed designs.
Though exceptionally skilled, he was unsanctified, serving for large wages out of covetousness rather than devotion to God. His example encouraged covetousness and weakened self-denial among the other workers. Solomon should have trusted God to provide consecrated helpers with the needed skill instead of seeking a workman from among those who had turned from God.
