2 Chronicles 2:17

And Solomon numbered all the strangers that were in the land of Israel, after the numbering wherewith David his father had numbered them; and they were found an hundred and fifty thousand and three thousand and six hundred.

The verse stands in the history of the undivided kingdom in the account of Solomon's reign and the building of the temple. In that account Chronicles gives particular emphasis to the temple work and services of this period.

It records that 153,600 strangers, that is resident foreigners living in Israel, were counted. The counting followed the numbering with which David his father had numbered them. The count belongs to the assigning of men and the organizing of the temple work set out in the chapter. It shows the large workforce employed in preparing materials for and building the temple.
