2 Chronicles 2:6
But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him? But who is able to build him an house, seeing the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him? who am I then, that I should build him an house, save only to burn sacrifice before him?
God is so great that even the heaven and heaven of heavens cannot contain him. Not even the highest heavens are large enough to hold him. Therefore no earthly house or temple can contain, house, or limit him. No building can confine God within walls made by human hands.
Solomon recognized how great and momentous the work of building a house for God was. He understood the scale of undertaking a temple for one whom the heavens cannot contain. The temple is therefore built not as a dwelling large enough to hold God. It is built as a place dedicated to his name for worship by burning sacrifice before him.
