2 Chronicles 20:2
Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi. Then there came some that told Jehoshaphat, saying, There cometh a great multitude against thee from beyond the sea on this side Syria; and, behold, they be in Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi.
The great multitude coming to battle against Jehoshaphat was made up of the children of Moab and Ammon and others with them. They came from beyond the sea on the side of Syria. They were reported to have reached Hazazon-tamar, which is En-gedi in Judah.
The news came as a warning brought to Jehoshaphat by messengers telling of the advance of a great invading force. The report marked a grave threat to Judah near the close of Jehoshaphat's reign. The tidings made Jehoshaphat afraid, so he set himself to seek the Lord and proclaimed a fast throughout all Judah, and Judah gathered together from all its cities to ask help of the Lord.
In such danger God's people are to remember that God is their strength and strong tower of defense, looking not at supposed impossibilities but to Him who has all power and limitless resources. They are not to trust in princes or put men in the place of God, because human beings are fallible and erring. In every emergency they are to feel that the battle is His, so that apparent impossibilities make the victory all the greater.
