2 Chronicles 20:8

And they dwelt therein, and have built thee a sanctuary therein for thy name, saying,

Israel dwelt and settled in the land of Canaan that God gave them, and there they built a sanctuary for His name. The land itself was not the sanctuary, for the sanctuary was distinct from the land in which it was built, erected within it. That sanctuary was the dwelling place of God's glory on earth among His people.

After Israel took possession of Canaan, Solomon's temple served as this sanctuary, containing holy and most holy places and receiving the vessels transferred from the movable sanctuary built in the desert. It was the place where the people could stand before God and seek Him for help in trouble, crying to Him in affliction. They came there trusting His promise to hear and help them.
