King Jehoram Reads Elijah's LetterBible World

2 Chronicles 21:15

And thou shalt have great sickness by disease of thy bowels, until thy bowels fall out by reason of the sickness day by day.

The words belong to a written reproof sent by Elijah to Jehoram king of Judah while Elijah was still on earth before his translation, because the apostasy in Judah could not be left unreproved. The threatened great sickness upon Jehoram himself was God's punishment for refusing to walk in the ways of Jehoshaphat and Asa, for walking in the way of the kings of Israel, for causing Judah and Jerusalem to go a whoring after the whoredoms of the house of Ahab, and for slaying his own brothers who were better than himself. It stands together with the threat that the Lord would smite with a great plague his people, his children, his wives, and all his goods, showing that Judah was pursuing the same course that had brought the northern kingdom to the verge of ruin.

It foretold Jehoram's severe sickness of the bowels as judgment, fulfilled when the Lord struck him and the illness led to his death. The disease of the bowels was incurable, and after two years of suffering he died of it. It forms part of the historical background to the events surrounding Ahaziah and the destruction of the house of Ahab.
