2 Chronicles 23:14

Then Jehoiada the priest brought out the captains of hundreds that were set over the host, and said unto them, Have her forth of the ranges: and whoso followeth her, let him be slain with the sword. For the priest said, Slay her not in the house of the LORD.

This command stands in the record of the kings of Judah, in the history that spans Athaliah's wicked seven-year reign and Joash's forty-year reign. Athaliah had seized the throne for herself and sought to destroy the royal seed, but the infant Joash was preserved by being hidden within the temple. When Joash was seven years old the people rose against the usurper, brought the child out, and proclaimed him and made him king.

At that crisis Jehoiada the priest gave orders to the captains of hundreds set over the host to lead Athaliah forth out of the ranges, that is, beyond the temple precincts, and he forbade that she be slain in the house of the Lord, while commanding that whoever followed her should be put to death with the sword. She was therefore taken outside before she was executed, and her death ended her wicked rule and restored Joash to the throne under Jehoiada's direction.
