2 Chronicles 23:9
Moreover Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David’s, which were in the house of God. Moreover Jehoiada the priest delivered to the captains of hundreds spears, and bucklers, and shields, that had been king David’s, which were in the house of God.
The spears and bucklers and shields were weapons that had belonged to King David and had been kept in store in the house of God. Jehoiada the priest delivered those stored weapons to the captains of hundreds and thus armed them for the work before them. The armed Levites and others then stood guard over the sanctuary and its service, defending it while the coronation of Joash took place.
That arming was part of Jehoiada's plan to protect Joash and to establish him as king, restoring him to the throne of Judah. It served the revolt that overthrew Athaliah and brought her rule to an end.
