2 Chronicles 24:25

And when they were departed from him, (for they left him in great diseases,) his own servants conspired against him for the blood of the sons of Jehoiada the priest, and slew him on his bed, and he died: and they buried him in the city of David, but they buried him not in the sepulchres of the kings.

This verse belongs to the record of the kings in Judah, in the section covering the forty-year reign of Joash as king of Judah. It stands in the closing portion of Second Chronicles beginning with chapter 24, which deals wholly with Judah through the reigns of Joash, Amaziah, Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, Hezekiah, Manasseh, Amon, Josiah, Jehoahaz, Jehoiakim, Jehoiachin, and Zedekiah, down to the destruction of Jerusalem and the full captivity to Babylon. Joash was good as long as Jehoiada the priest lived.

After invaders left Joash gravely ill, his own servants conspired against him in revenge for the blood of Jehoiada's sons and killed him on his bed, and he was buried in the city of David but denied burial in the tombs of the kings. His reign shows that departing from God brings strife and great loss. Together with those closing chapters, the verse teaches the awfulness of sin and the certainty of judgments that sooner or later follow, set against God's wonderful mercy in pardoning His people when they return to Him.
