2 Chronicles 24:6

And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the collection, according to the commandment of Moses the servant of the LORD, and of the congregation of Israel, for the tabernacle of witness?

The collection called for in the verse is the half shekel that Moses directed every Israelite to contribute whenever the people were numbered for the service of the tabernacle. That same levy was afterward applied to the repair of the temple. The tabernacle itself, and afterward the temple itself, were erected wholly by freewill offerings. The tithe set apart exclusively for the Levites was by no means the limit of giving for religious purposes. A separate collection in addition to the tithe was required to meet necessary repairs and other expenses of God's house.
