2 Chronicles 25:1

2 Chronicles 25:1 introduces and opens and begins the account of Amaziah, king of Judah. It gives his age as twenty-five when he began to reign, his twenty-nine year reign in Jerusalem, and names his mother as Jehoaddan, who was from Jerusalem. His reign came after Joash and before Azariah, who was also called Uzziah. The verse belongs to the fuller history of the kings of Judah found in Chronicles, beyond the parallel record in Kings which covers the same ground with fewer details.
He was an unstable king, and disloyal. His reign shows that doing duty brought blessing, while departing from God brought strife and captivity and great loss, and his history might have been very different if he had remembered God. God was willing to turn to help His people when they sought Him with all the heart and wrought mightily for them.
His course shows that he accepted the prophet's testimony when it suited him but resented reproof, threatened the prophet, and refused counsel, so the prophet warned that God had determined to destroy him because he had not listened. His history shows that money already spent is no reason to continue a wrong course, for when told not to use Israel's hired army he worried about losing the hundred talents, but trusted that God could give him more, and won without the army.
